Hi everyone. I just purchased a 165.002 impulsively. I’d appreciate your opinions. The seller says that it was just cleaned up and serviced by Omega. As a bonus question, do you think the buckle is original?

Just noticed the minute hand is short...‍♂️ I don’t know how I missed that. The lume is is mismatched as well

The buckle looks correct. It is odd that the lume is mismatched. Also, the hands have been relumed and kind of incorrectly considering that they would have partially had black paint--However, once the paint is gone, I'm unsure if it can be replaced.

I don't think this was done by Omega.

If you did not see the paperwork from Omega for the servicing, I would think twice before taking the seller at his word.

And, Having Omega do the service in Switzerland and having an Omega Jeweler send it to there local WM are two very different things.

Omega Switzerland would have replaced the hands with NOS original equivalents.

He is offering to trade it in for his other Omega 166.002. Did these ever come with smooth casebacks?

Well, how much did he charge you? It is kind of a critical factor in deciding how good or bad this deal was.

Also, yes, casebacks do sometimes come blank so that they could have have been personalized. Just make sure that it has the correct case reference on the inside.

Is he giving you both for same price? For that kind of money, I'd much prefer the first watch. For the same type of money, why would you settle for the less attractive dial? It also shows the fact that it is impossible that this was serviced by Omega. Omega charges a base of $550USD.

Of these two, I pick #1 but at a less price point.

Exactly, but when I initially inquired about the watch, he said that this watch came in a trade 3 weeks ago, and that the previous owner had it serviced at Omega. The previous owner gave him cash plus this "recently Omega serviced" Seamaster for a Datejust. He told me the reason for selling so soon is that he has another Omega, which is the 166.002 he is offering to swap

They made lots, but I've never looked. Might have to resort to a parts watch, so, from all the above comments, you see how this can become an expensive endeavor real quickly.

We all have project watches.......some easier to complete than others. Always better to spring for an original watch unless you like a challenge and have some time.

But, as I've said before.....if you like it, buy it, there's only 100 people around the world who would know or care that that hand is not correct.

Thanks for the info. One other question if you don't mind. Are the hands on these two references the same and/or interchangeable?

The first watch, the one you actually preferred, is nicer looking (IMO) and all the bits look fine for a 60 year old watch.

The price you paid for the watch is an extremely good, particularly if you factor in a service (whoever did it).

The hands, face etc look fine to me.

if you want reassurance, although why you would I’m not really sure, just go onto Chrono24 and see similar watches to yours, with hands like yours costing the same or more.

Just wanted to give an update. I met with the seller today. He brought his other 166.002. The watch looked decent but I just got my money back and called it a day. The lesson I learned is to never buy a watch impulsively, even if it sounds like a good deal, an do your research first! Lesson learned. Thanks everyone here for your help
