    Hi All,

Long time lurker and lover of the amount of knowledge and passion in here. I would like some advice on sourcing an Omega Speedmaster 105.003 what are the pitfalls of this model and who are best avoided when sourcing one of these references? I have done some research and have a reasonable overview of this piece, however, little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.... So I thought I'd ask the experts/passionate folks in here for advise and guidence. I am going to sell off one of my other watches to add this to my collection and don't want to be caught out seeing as this is an expensive purchase. I have a connection to this watch after finding out my granddad had one for many years and loved it, along with the obvious Ed White connection means a lot to me.

Any help and advise gratefully received.

    Thanks in advance,

    Damo

A good choice but getting expensive for a nice one now, bank on 5 figures (GBP) for a really decent model, approaching that for a more lived in example. Originality is key. Read and memorise the relevant pages on Speedmaster101, particularly the pages on serial number ranges and what was originally fitted. Learning to spot the difference in lug profile between the 63, 64 and 65 can be useful. Investing in a copy of Moonwatch Only may save you some heartache too. Mine says hi:

Welcome Damo. If you don’t have a copy of the Moonwatch Only book already then it’s worth investing in.

Thanks guys :) padders that is a stunning watch!!! Thanks for sharing. I'm prepared for the hit. What would you say is fair value for a good example £10-13K? I will invest in the book thanks for the tip. would you say either of these are poor examples? To my eye they are reasonable and seem to have all the right things but I am totally aware of the small details making a difference.

No 1 has been polished to death. Lugs and caseback are pretty awful.

No 2 is familiar and was discussed on here a while back I think. It may even be up for sale by an OF member for all I know. That looks a better candidate than the first watch but it isn’t exactly cheap.

Haha you must be talking about this one...
I want to fund that 2998 but selling a first owner 105003 like this would be extremely stupid...

Who knows ... but tropical from a dealer means €€€€ even if the brown is ugly:)

I would stay out of the tropical for a first purchase

I have one piece of advice: don't try to source the watch. Sourcing is WAY too expensive. Simply try to buy one. It's much cheaper.

    Carry on!

Thanks, possibly the wrong word to use. I'm looking to buy a good watch at a fair price to be the custodian of and enjoy :) Seeing as none of us really own these things as the move through life experiencing things with each owner. If it were a car I'd have no problem as this is my area of expertise, so all of the advise given here is very much appreciated.
