Help pricing vintage watch

Hey all,

I have a vintage watch my grandfather left me that I recently got back from Omega (sent it in for some repairs). I have no clue how much it is worth, or what the ideal avenues to sell would be, so looking for any advice here. I was told by Omega that the watch is reference number CD 168.0029, featuring a gold capped case (They included this link in the email)

I don't think the band is original though from what they told me during the repair consultation.

I've attached photos to the post (I think lol). Apologies if I am going about this incorrectly or unaware of specific forum rules, I was referred here from another forum (pokerchipforum.com) where I am a long time member under the same username.

Thanks for any guidance!

There isn't much info here, there are no recent sold listings on eBay, but a few for-sale listings at about $2500 that have been around a while. As well as this one for 1600 that has been there a while https://www.belmontwatches.com/prod..._content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic

That likely means these are all overpriced significantly.

IMO, there isn't anything special about this reference to be more than the normal 500-1000 for a vintage Omega. Perhaps a little bit on the higher end of that thanks to the recent Omega service, though case condition hurts it a bit.

Welcome! Your best bet is trying to see what this would sell for on ebay. You can look at other gold capped C cased Constellations.

If you sent it in to Omega, you just ponied up for the world's most expensive service, so I cannot think you are hoping to sell it. Are you trying to insure it? Gold capped is not all that desirable to collectors, but it sure makes for a good wearer. I'm no expert, but I would think it would not sell for north of $1k, even looking sharp like it is now. Unfortunately the service doesn't add a lot of value, except to you, who will know it is working as well as it can.

I wonder if that was previously some sort of custom case finish. Unfortunately, it's not looking so good at the moment. And the hands may be replacements. My gut feel is that you would be lucky to get $500 USD for it, more or less.

Makes sense!

Thank you! Yeah I had no clue what other avenue to fix besides going to Omega when I got it, I guess I would've been better off posting here before going to them haha. To be honest, I haven't worn watches a lot recently so I was looking to sell it, even it's just to break even or cut my losses on repairing it. It's just been sitting in my desk for months.

I'm not entirely sure regarding the case or the hands. I know the hands were fallen off when I did take it to get repaired initially, so they may be replacements indeed!

I always think you should keep a watch like that. You might want to wear it in 10 years, you never know.

If you're going to sell, I'd just price it below the others that Erich already researched. Maybe start with $1200, and plan on it taking a while to sell. If you wanted to sell fast, I'd list at $900, and I still think it wouldn't sell fast. Include a picture of the service receipt, that will ease the concerns of some buyers.

Thank you for the great advice! And you think ebay would be the best route to sell it?

Yes! It just gives you the largest audience. And the better the photography, the higher the price. (hopefully)

I have my grandfathers watches in an esteemed spot in my collection and they are just bulovas and simple stuff. IMO family stuff is priceless but I realize everyone has different family dynamics and needs.
I hope the watch serves you in the best way possible. Do you know if your grand pops tried to do something different with the case? As others alluded it doesn’t look like typical wear/damage

Isn't there a brushing pattern like that? I thought that factory pattern did exist, and once in a while they get posted. No idea if it's correct for this watch though, but I've seen gold C cases like that.

From what they told me when I went to drop it off for repair, it was like a brushed metal finish. I don't know anything about if he tried to do anything with it (he passed when I was very young, and the watch was just given to me with some of his belongings left behind).

Yeah I think this might be what it is. They did tell me it was a brushed metal case (I'm terribly paraphrasing). I wonder if there's a way I can get written confirmation from them on it. It doesn't give any details on my receipt from the repair. Maybe I should email the same omega email that specified the model number?

Welcome @moechar

It looks like someone has tried to customise the gold cap case to replicate the style of the linen dial - it would have started off life with a subtle orbital graining on the face of the case.

As such, the watch is not going to attract a collector but as an Genta-designed Omega-serviced C case it will attract someone who likes that style of watch.

EBay will definitely be your best bet and it should find its true value there.

BTW the reference is 168.029 but Omega add an extra 0 on their vintage database.

Here is a link to good info on C cases
