Done deal! $1696 out the door! Will be posting more pics of the movement as soon as my wrench gets here. Thanks again, everyone- the advice was much appreciated!

Nice pickup, congrats!!! 👍

Not so easy to find a set in good condition. The most recent sets I have seen have had at least small levels of damage or lume loss, and have gone for around $700-800. But I bet that a set with the perfect color or patina would fetch much more. Speedmaster hands just don't age attractively very often... I have a set in what I would call a pretty decent state that I am probably putting up soon.

Interesting, this isn't my experience. I've often seen quite decent tritium hand sets for half that price. Maybe I should stock up.

Thanks, I’m pretty stoked! Not sure how common it is to come across these in Pawnshops, (especially in this condition), but I know I’ll visit this particular one from time to time, just in case!

Congratulations! Just treat it like a 5K watch, not what you paid for it! Fantastic deal

How realistic is it to find tritium hands these days?

Will do!

So this is my first Vintage anything- the hands in the photo above, what would be a fair price to buy, and then, should I just wait until Service to get them swapped out?

A perfect start into the Speedy world. Congrats! The price is unbelievable - even if you add the $$ for a set f correct tritium hands. And the 145.022-69 will go up further in price during the next years

Assuming you'd only need to replace the hour and minute hands, you should be able to find them for around 500$ I think.

Since a (real) service would require removing all the hands anyway, I'd simply rather wait till you find the right person to proceed with that task and get a service booked.

Might appear totally disproportionate compared to the price you've paid your watch but those hands fit a wide batch of watches, basically from 1962 to 1998 and you can imagine that the price of the parts is in line with the price of the watches those parts would fit - I am not thinking of Speedmasters from the nineties 😀

Thanks! I feel a little guilty wearing it- i’m generally hard on things. I wonder- does anyone swap out components with beater parts (bezel, face, etc) in order to wear these watches more
While leaving the original parts tucked safely away? I suppose that would make sense on a more pristine example...

No, I totally understand that. To me it does seem disproportionate, but I recognize I got the watch for a pretty decent price. $500 is a 1/3 of the whole watch, though 😟. The horse trader in me will have to try to get something for these hands that I have. I think i’ll Wear it for a cpl years and revisit at Service.

If you intend to wear it daily, I recommend to consider a proper service asap. If the movement is dry and you wear it daily, even if it keeps good time, the parts will get used and you'll get damage to the movement parts - and an unexpectedly high service cost - at the end. 😉

Congrats @Wanta68GT ! That's one bargain pickup, rarely seen these days!

Listen to @kov 's wise words of advise. He's spot on.
Three years ago I was in a similar situation as you are now.I bought my -69 SW for 1.500 €.
I was hesitant at first to get it serviced (500€) but after hanging around here a bit and begining to appreciate what a great deal I got on a very valuable watch I found my self having it serviced and tracking down the correct bracelet after just a couple of weeks and never looked back on the money invested.
It will serve you for many decades to come (if serviced) and give you a great deal of joy everytime you take a look at it.

Cheers,

Max
