Help identifying vintage speedmaster reduced

Can anyone help me identify my first omega speedmaster reduced? I’m trying to figure out approximate era and other information. The model is ST 175.0043-1 which I believe makes it around 29 years old? I have been hold with Omega forever and can’t get through. I have had no success looking up the serial number (54149354) though I’m not truly sure how to even go about doing such. I’m a newbie in this arena. Thanks.

You tell us you have had no luck looking up the serial number. But you don’t give us the serial number! As to identifying the watch, the identification will be the model number inside the case back. Help us help you.

That would help wouldn’t it? I just added the model and serial number. Thanks!

Seems you already got it fairly well identified as an older reduced and the serial brings it to around 1993 according to databases online

Thank you. Any recommendations on verifying authenticity?

Well if you have it opened up then you should be able to figure that out lickety split, and if not then post the movement pics here but I would bet you dollars to donuts its genuine.

I need to take it in to open the back I suppose. I really appreciate the insight. Buying something in a category I have minimal experience in sometimes makes me squirrely. This is my first grown up watch. I’d be delighted to post movement pictures but I’m not sure what you mean or how to go about that?

I don’t think that is technically a Speedmaster Reduced, but is a Speedmaster Date. It doesn’t use the same modular chrono (introduced in the reduced) but a movement based on the Valjoux 7750. A lot of people called them Reduced because the case is about the same size, but your watch has a better movement.

That is clearly a speedmaster date, not a reduced. Different beasts

Well a reduced has a flat bezel, and has sub dials at 3,6,9. It also uses a movement that some people are not fond of. They do not have a date window.

Dates use a variant of the eta 7750 have angled bezels and subdials at 6,9,12 and a date window.

Later dates are normally chronometer grade movements as well.

not a reduced

I was under the impression that the "reduced" was in regard to size not movement?

From my limited knowledge, the typical Speedy Reduced models have a modular movement with the chronograph module sitting atop the watch movement rather than built integrated from the ground up (presumably this makes them slightly thicker than OPs watch). I think that's what Foo2rama is referring to.

Yes i'm aware of the movement types. However I have heard all the smaller speedmasters referred to as "reduced".

That's not the usual convention to my knowledge. As suggested above, the Speedy Reduced name applies to the modular movement with sub-dials at 3, 6, and 9. The OP watch is an example of the Speedy Date.

If you call a Speedy Date a Speedy Reduced, some people will think you don't know what you're talking about, so we are here to help. 😀

And that's not a bad thing. But just in case, for those rare occasions where you might care, now you know. 😉
