My first thought would be a Sub, but I have to say the Explorer pictured above just might be the ticket. I have the Explorer II, which has the GMT (sort of) complication...the Explorer I is easier to read and dressier. I'm sure your father is going to love which ever you get him.

I am planning to buy a rolex, I plan to buy it and let my dad have it. He is not really into watches but I am sure he will be happy if he gets one as a gift.( I might have to tell him its fake to get him to wear it) It has to be on a bracelet. Clear dial, he is getting old and it can not be too flashy. I don t think he will wear a dress watch so I am thinking sub or explorer, but not sure which will be best. A reliable movement will be necessary and I will be responsible for getting it serviced, the cost of servicing alone might give him a heart attack. All input is appreciated, My budget is about 5k GBP

Don't buy him a watch that he doesn't want, won't wear and can't read...

If it's on a strap I'd go Explorer over the sub, if a sub I'd go with a no date 14060m as it has a skimmer profile.

Also a GMT is a good option . Here's a 5512 ( similar to a 14060m but older) and an Explorer

To be a bit clearer, He is not into watches to the point where he would spend a lot of money on one himself. He is 72 and I was thinking that a simple dial with clear numerals on it would be good, so that he doesn t have to strain his eyes. I am thinking that many people who are not interested in watches would be able to spot a rolex, and although it is unlikely, I would not like him to become the target of a ruffian who might mug him a explorer or sub are a little less noticable than a pepsi or blnr, which I would buy for myself so seem to fit the bill quite well. I think the best option is probably just ask him which one he would like and get that one. Another option is to give him my Omega SM300 to "look after" as I am probably moving to a country in the autum and I am planning to take the cheapest watch I can find in case it gets lost, stolen or held to ransome by corrupt officials.

I ended up giving my dad a quartz chrono that used to be my "travel watch". Water resistant, very easy for older eyes to read. He knows what my watch collection is all about, but he's just not into watches anymore...Part of me wants to get him an oversized digital watch so he can see the time without his glasses on.

I recently sourced a watch for my 85 year old mother. She is pretty sharp and active, but was prone to forget to change the date on her Swatch after a non-31 day month. This is what I got her. It's clear, simple and once set, due to radio synching (not bluetooth), automatically adjusts across months. She loves it 😀 Unfortunately, the synching only works in GB and Eire for a lot this manufacturer's models http://www.acctim.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=6 however other manufacturers like Casio also offer watches that also do this in all sorts of styles and varying price points.

Perhaps, rather than resort to subterfuge, consider something a lot less expensive, that can be worn without worrying about how it's treated and has the sort of functionality that older* people actually appreciate 😎

I have decided to get him the explorer 1 If he doesn t want it then I would be happy to have it myself or maybe my brother could have it, he has a wife and three kids and would never be able to afford a nice watch and I know he would enjoy it. Thank you for your helpful points and taking the time to offer advice.

Good luck and a great choice. And it's always wise to pick gifts with yourself in mind further down the road 😀.

I feel that the SubC is a flashy watch that people will notice. Event though the bracelet is fully brushed... the ceramic bezel really adds some bling vs the old inserts. I would choose either an Explorer 39mm or the Oyster Perpetual (Air King)

Great choice on the Explorer. And it wears great on leather as well if your dad wants to go classic

Good on you. Have you considered a Milgauss? Should be able to buy a new one within your budget.
