I am planning to buy a rolex, I plan to buy it and let my dad have it. He is not really into watches but I am sure he will be happy if he gets one as a gift.( I might have to tell him its fake to get him to wear it) It has to be on a bracelet. Clear dial, he is getting old and it can not be too flashy. I don t think he will wear a dress watch so I am thinking sub or explorer, but not sure which will be best. A reliable movement will be necessary and I will be responsible for getting it serviced, the cost of servicing alone might give him a heart attack. All input is appreciated, My budget is about 5k GBP

You can't go wrong with a Sub..I take it you're after a new one? I bought a 116610LN in Dec '15 for a smidge over £5k. Brand new with the new 5 year Rolex warranty. Bullet proof and looks great on the wrist. I'm sure your Dad would be over the moon to receive one!

Good luck.

Date Just 2 non fluted for dress. If he likes sport and you can stretch another £700 get Submariner. The good thing about Rolex is your not bogged down with countless limited edition models. It is quite simple.

It doesn't have to be new, that's just the the money I have spare. I have no idea what rolexes cost or what i could get for that kind of money, I am an Omega person all the way. I much prefer vintage watches myself, but don t think my dad would really understand the appeal so I thought a newer one would be better.

If you want to spend £5k buy new from AD. If you want to buy used get a good deal on a 36mm date just for much cheaper.

For the sake of £300-500 saving i'd go new, Watchfinder UK always have a good selection of new and used Rolex.

Are Watchfinder's an AD? If buy a new Rolex AD is a must as discounts for grey watches are not so good with Rolex.

I think AD is the best option, if I can get a new one for my budget then it makes sense to go down that route.

I think you made a typing error without realising it. See below.

Either a Sub or Exp will be gret. If he wants something a little dressier for some occasions, the Explorer will be a good choice as it's quite versatile.

The new Exp is very legible at 39mm; my father is 81 this year and having a bit of difficulty reading time on his older 36mm DJ. Contrast on the 214270 is quite decent; ditto for the Sub.

i would go for the explorer... i am not a fun of the modern subs and i've always liked the explorer.
Anyways whatever you decide that's a great gesture, i am sure your dad will wear it proudly

I was thinking about that too, is it possible to buy a bracelet for it too or just the strap. He hates straps. I have other watches on my list for myself, all omega 😀

yes but the ranger bracelet is without the end links.
also the size of the watch is at 41mm vs the 39mm of the explorer

Had much experience buying watches for Dad, with mixed - nay poor - results.

Gave him an Aqua Terra 2500 auto. Wore it 5 times in 10 years then gave it back to me. He couldn't be bothered to set the time, and he refused to wear an "expensive" watch daily.

I realized that I cannot force my own tastes on my father. I need to buy him something that he will like.

So 11 years later I gave him a 2-tone Aqua Terra quartz - looks almost exactly like his Seiko daily wearer. Gave my mother a matching model to boot for peer pressure purposes. No more excuses dad!

It is something that I have to consider, he does wear a watch, a swatch chronograph that I bought him for Christmas many many years ago. My plan is to kind of loan it to him and not really ask for it back. He is one of those wants a lot for his money kind of people. He does like Rolex's but would never consider them a worthwhile purchase, which is why a Tudor might be a good option because he has never heard of them and might think it a cheap watch and wear it happily.
