Hi All,

I am looking to buy a present for my hubby - a vintage omega... but have no idea how to buy one, if its real or fake etc... and i cant ask him for help.

Can someone please recommend an omega vintage to buy, which model, and where from, if someone is selling, i am happy to look at it.

Has to be a leather strap, preferably manual (not sure which is more valuable, manual or automatic)

I apologies in advance for being a complete numpty head...

PS: i am limited on time is well - need it quick

What country are you in? Guessing UK or Eire from use of word "numpty"....
Are you thinking date, no-date, day and date?
Gold, stainless steel, gold cap?
Budget?

You need to exercise extreme care when buying a vintage Omega and being in a hurry is a serious handicap. Ebay and Chrono24 are shark-infested waters, as are most of the dealerships. The safest place by far is the Private Sales forum here.

Hi yes hence I am turning to this forum for help.

Budget £1500-£2000 (less would be amazing lol)

Ideally with a date

Gold/ sliver don’t matter - I’m more interested in having the correct watch and as authentic as I can have it

Thank you

Not a site I've seen before. At first glance, looks better than some dealers and whilst there are some redials there, he says so in the descriptions I've looked at. But he's in Canada so you are faced with a hefty customs bill.

How long have you got to make a purchase?

Overpriced, but usually correct. You'll need to read the descriptions carefully because he does also sell redialed watches. Words to look out for are "retouched", "updated", "refinished", "enhanced", etc.

Apologies i am taking this back to the basics...

which model to go for (yes i know it will be a matter of opinion on that)

Personally from the pics i have seen i like the seamaster or Pie Pan (but this is purely on looks)

( i did try to narrow it down to his birth year, but i dnt like any in that year - 1978. prefer the older ones)

i am so out of my depth - there was a point i was going to ask the hubby to go and pick one and ill pay for it... but would ruin the surprise

All pie pans are automatics. They are also a very hot item just now. But that does give a better idea.

I know - my opinion is purely on looks and noting else. I know he prefers the manual ones to automatic - so ideally would like a manual one

if it helps he generally talks about how they operate/ the mechanism etc...

if there is anyone that can send me some links/ pics so i can start narrowing it down i would be forever grateful. :-(

Subsidiary seconds dial, sweep seconds hand, or no preference?

I don’t mind

But would prefer the subsidiary second - he has other watches with the sweep second...

I came across this on eBay. Again initial liking was on looks but no serial no given (read a few threads on identifying a fake)

Seller is private and claims this is original - but I am not convinced this is either worth this much or is authentic omega - gut feeling.

£600 asking price

Id ask the seller for a couple head on pictures of the dial and caseback, but at first glance it looks quite nice.
