Have we finally gone over the edge?

Hate to say it but if China and India want to live like the western world we will need 6 planets.

The super herds of cattle in South America to feed China is worth a google
Is that a true statement, regarding the cattle? I would think that would be more of a western thing as beef isn’t as popular in China as it is in many western parts but there is much more that I don’t know than I know and if that is a true statement I find it very interesting. I’m not debating I’m just a bit embedded in the Chinese culture and like know these things.

Oh I was way off they are the biggest consumer of meat. It’s not surprising with their population size it’s just every time I’ve been and I have no clue the number of restaurants and fantastic meals I had in China beef was almost never the main serving. But that’s why we can’t judge things on personal experience alone much too small of a sample to see the whole picture. Very interesting thanks you learned me something.

Well human consumption of meat over the millennia did lead to the growth and development of the brain.

I guess some would say we ate too much and it has had the reverse effect of making humans “stupider”

...The other day got a diner with a few friends. 5 people all PhDs in various experimental / life sciences more or less connected to climate change. Started to talk about the latter, which we never really did before. Turns out to be the most depressing diner I’ve ever had.
That's what's really scary. Climate scientists who have been saying we are underreporting the actual threat.

Few things that we all agreed on : the less scientific people are, the more optimistic they are about the situation and the ability of science to get the problems solved....

Ah, science does seem like magic sometimes. I have no idea how this phone thing in my hand works (magic?)
The blue pill or red pill question. The more you know, the worse you feel.

Agreed - there is only one part of the equation we can have an impact on though, and IMO we need to do more to limit the negative consequences of our actions.
What gas guzzlers are you driving these days Al, or have you gone electric?

I still have my 2017 M2. I bought it in 2017, and so far I’ve put a little over 11,000 km’s on it. I don’t drive much obviously, it’s a summer driver only, mostly for going to play tennis.

My wife also works from home, so she really doesn’t drive her 335 much either. Mostly for groceries. Hers is a 2015 and when we need to replace it, we will be considering an electric of some kind.

It's interesting how many people are now making life changing decisions. My oldest daughter, a sophomore in college, is now vegetarian. Her decision was made mostly due contributing a smaller carbon footprint as well as leading a healthier life. My next car will be electric for sure, although, I'll have to wait for a while, current care only has 25K miles on it. I don't think I would have even considered electric 5 yrs ago, but we have made tremendous stride.

Good to know you're thinking green Al.

While we all clamor for the electric vehicle, we need to assess and change how the material is obtained.

Here we have a cobalt miner that will supply the cobalt so we can feel good about the contribution.

I realize this is a stark example, but it is what it is. Manufacturing has costs and here is one that is existing now.

Same here. Ours also went gluten free for joint issues.

It makes a lot of sense. The rest of us have cut back on beef but haven't made the switch. Think I will always keep fish in my diet (not that anyone would be interested.)

When we drove from Portland Oregon to Bryce Canyon this last summer we passed huge cattle lots, which included cows with their heads in metal grates feeding and hills of manure. As much as I like to spout off about science and the environment, it's hard to do the right thing and also visualize the impacts. But those were some big piles of pooh. I could start to imagine the larger impact.

We actually looked up the impact of livestock on the environment as we were driving. (I know, some kind of fun vacation.) I don't remember the exact statistic but cows are about 15% of carbon output from burping and farting methane.

But here science (yay science!) Has ideas, including different feed to reduce methane as well as this crazy device...

Yes, exploitation is horrible and shouldn't be tolerated. Better regulation, oversight, etc... The oil and gas industries have given us plenty of examples of exploitation to learn from.

Yes, of course. The old man trend is to get bigger and more cushier cars as you get older, but my cars have gotten smaller and more efficient as I get older.

Compared to what my old V12 jag with a three speed transmission used to get for mileage (with it’s twin gas tanks) what I drive now is downright green.

Sorry I know this isn’t the music thread but this topic makes me think of this song, like it would be my reply but Ian beat me to it

Look, our anthropocentric view comes to an end. The end of the world has already started (climate change and extinction of species etc.). The origin of this development lies 12'000 years back, when hunters becames farmers (in Mesopotamia), another step came with the industrialization 120 years ago, the last step after the 2nd world war when everybody believed in economic growth. Our not-reversable influence on geology and biology of "our world" IS happening an started long ago. The problem lies in the fact, that our egocentric frame of experience (80 years of our lifetime) is much too short to get the point, since "we" (our predecessors) started this trend long ago and the consequences of our actions today influence geology plus climate/biodiversity "how it used to be" still in hundreds or thousands of years from now (long after we have gone). We are in the middle of the "Anthropocene". Let us solidarize with all living beings now. We have no choice in the long term, there is no ecology "to protect" (it is too late for that). Besides, we take ourselves much too seriously.

Whatever type of energy you put in your tanker / battery, to me the problem is way more simple : we’re using a 1,5 tons machine to move a 70kg living mass. And in most of our days, we’re far away from creating enough energy, of whatever form, to compensate.

Somewhere, someone or something is paying the bill that we’re not.

Agree, it always makes me smile when I hear that we must save the planet, or the ecology… None of them needs us and they will be there long after we’re gone, it’s us that we should try to save. But as long as we have this kind of conception, we’re not on the right tracks …

This is all getting rather philosophical and interesting... maybe part of the issue remains who we all think 'we' is and what 'we' want from life. In developed countries broadley the standard of living / life expectancy, populations have increased, but it seems overall levels of happiness, satisfaction and long term health have decreased while 'wealth, power and control ' has become ever more concentrated in a smaller group. Maybe the issue is that we are searching for answers without fully understanding the problem or what we actually want.. other than survival ... 6x9 = 42 :0)
Will it be Star Trek, Blade Runner or Mad Max ......

Also, where is all this "electricity" coming from to power these said "clean vehicles"?

This is a very very good point. Of course the vehicle is only as clean as the source of its electric power, and we do not currently have enough green electrical sources to maintain the electric demand of big cities and now cars.
