This isn’t a “what watch/guitar thread should I buy as I find those kind of odd. However I am a bit stuck. I was never aware of the Santa Cruz Guitar Company until recently. I picked one up, hit a chord and oh my goodness what a sweat sound.

That’s a 4K guitar which is a lot of quagmire. On the other hand I played a Yamaha acoustic with pickups that sounded very nice for 800 usd.

In this case I have plenty of bass guitars to unload so it will only cost me guitars.

A while back my crazy buddy cut open a Chinese Yamaha to compare it to a U.S. made Yamaha that got broken during transport. We found the Chinese one, while cheaper wood in spots was surprisingly good quality.

I had a damn Martin 000 I sold to get another bass. I’m not real knowledgeable on guitars I’ve been playing a cheap Yamaha and believe it or not a Hyundai acoustic I received as a gift years back that actually sounds quite nice.

I’m wondering if there are any other guitar players out there and what you are using. The way that Santa Cruz rang true it is stuck in my damn head. The seller likes a rickenbacker bass I have but it’s the same model McCartney used.

If anyone has any experience either Santa Cruz I’d love to hear or what rig are you using that works well for you.

I know you are all wondering why I’m asking about acoustics when I can shred like tom morello all I can say to that is I pride myself in my humility.

Hmmm, my son covers all the bases - Fender Player series HSS Strat and Tele; PRS 24 SE and PRS electric-acoustic; Epiphone Les Paul, and Gibson Les Paul Standard. Lots of differences in the feel, etc. Les Paul's tend to be heavy, but if you play sitting down it's not much of an issue. The Fender Players are MIM, and have been surpassed by the newer Player IIs; they seem to be pretty solid for the $.

Since I do not know how to play, but I am tasked with funding his musical journey, I tend to focus on the equipment. I'm learning how to do basic setups, etc. And one thing that seems to be a recurring theme is to find a guitar you like the feel of (neck smooth or sticky, taller/shorter narrower/wider frets, etc.), and the pickups can always be swapped out if the sound is not totally to your liking.

Even within a certain guitar type (Strat, Tele, Les Paul, etc.) there are many variations and special models so neck shape, width, radius, smoothness, etc. can vary tremendously.

Maybe check out the Fender Vintage IIIs -- they are a lot of bang for the buck. And the Les Paul Studio Sessions ('25/ '26 models) are a good value relative to Standards. And frankly Epiphone is turning out some really cool Les Pauls, that generally list less than $1k.

No experience with Jackson, Ibaniez, etc. though, so the pool I swim in is fairly shallow.

Damn @BlackTalon you are a nice pops. Are you looking to adopt anyone. I’m game. Those are all excellent guitars you got your son. I really like the Paul Reed Smiths. Saw one at a pawn shop at a nice price but the neck was warped. I got a thing against Les Paul due to some business shanaigsns the pulled off but I’d still love to have one. Does your son play out often with a band? Is he trying to to go pro?

Anyway I think I confused things. Everything you mentioned is a fine electric guitar. The Santa Cruz guitar hand made in Cali along with the Yamaha and others are all acoustic. You mentioned not knowing Ibanez or Charvelle I think it was. Ibanez makes some killer electrics. I have a Ibanez bass the neck plays like butter (perhaps a little to narrow. The Charvelle is suitable for stage.

I saw tom morello do the ghost of tom joad solo on and Ibanez. That’s not his usual but most of his guitars little recognize the original as he modifies them so much.

You hit it on the head though it’s about how it plays and feels for you. When I picked up that Santa Cruz and hit a G string it just kinda held in the atmosphere like no acoustic I’ve played. It also felt like I could fall asleep holding it.

So I prob shouldn’t have brought this up. We had a few former members who left omega forum for the spirit in the sky. Mr Skunk Prince and Mr all wound up. Skunk prince was more accomplished and knowledgeable me and Wayne lacked perfect pitch so we didn’t excel without lots of practice.

Tom morello again as he makes you feel like picking up a guitar.

Oh last I’ll say. I do stop into pawnshops on occasion to look at guitars. I also peep watches of course. I was thinking what if one day they have both a superb watch and a superb guitar. My bankroll that day will only be big enough for one of them. Cause that’s the way it goes.

I’ll have a good laugh if that day comes to pass. Watches and guitars are similar in a way. You keep wanting to build up a collection despite honestly being able to get by with 2-3 just fine.

Anyway I’m leaning towards the Yamaha at this point as it has some decent pickups on board the acoustic. It’s 1/5 the price of the Santa Cruz but I don’t want to put a boatload of cash into a guitar then mess around putting pickups on it. I need an acoustic with pick ups as we want to recreate that great acoustic set by the Grateful Dead.

Well, it amused me but maybe it’s just my age …
