Grandad to Dad to Me

Hey everyone!

First post. Aghhhh!

I have been given my late father's Omega, which follows him inheriting from my grandfather. Problem is, I have no idea what it is. It is currently with my mother, so I can't get into the case to get a case number (my understanding is only a pro should open it anyway?). I hope to pick it up in the next couple of months. I've been on Paul's site (https://electric-watches.co.uk/) although it looks like he is away until 1st October. I've also been on Omega's Vintage Swiss Watches site to identify it. I've got as far as it being an f300. However, it doesn't say Geneve, Seamaster etc, and I cannot find a matching photo anywhere.

Does anyone here recognise it?

Thank you so much in advance

A quick image search would suggest it's a 9kt Gold 198.5001

Thank you! I was making it far more complicated than I needed to. Your Google skills are far superior to mine!

Where does this watch sit within the Omega world? Did it not belong to any particular collection? Presumably this is just a very basic entry level watch?

If anyone has any further insight, I'd be very grateful.

Have a great week!
If you're looking to have it serviced, I'll PM you the contact details of the watchmaker I use for my F300's

Once I've collected, I certainly will - although the servicing to valuation ratio scares me a bit - I know absolutely nothing about watches. Thanks in advance for the contact details.

A nice piece that looks like it will come up good with a service. Leave it to someone with expertise and it will serve you well for years to come. 👍

Also having the original buckle is a bonus 😉

I think you'll find this is far from a basic entry level watch. There is nothing basic about the tuning fork movement, hence the reason why expertise with these movements is hard to find.
With regards to value Vs service cost ratio, I don't think this will be an issue considering your watch is 9kt gold.
As long as you stick to an experienced independant watchmaker, I don't think cost will be an issue

I'm just reading up on timing fork movements now. Absolutely fascinating. Quite a special moment in time for watches.

You'll also hear it referred to as a 'Hummer' due to the noise the movement makes

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post a quick update. I'm really grateful to Keith who has now serviced my watch (photo attached), and made it 'hum' again. It now looks and works beautifully. Please don't hesitate to ask for his help. Also thanks to @Yo32Leigh for the recommendation. And finally thanks to all of you for your help identifying the watch and all the great information.

Looking forward to my next Omega.

Have a great weekend.

Ben

A tube of Polywatch or similar would rub out the scratches on the crystal

Hey congratulations on a beautiful watch, I have the same model that I bought a few years ago with some money that was left to me in my grandmothers will. I still have it but does need a service now.

The cases of these were made by Shakmanns of London, wonderful cases, very chunky and quite large compared to most gold watches of that period. Mine was in nowhere near the nice condition of yours(badly overpolished but it did make it a bargain buy for what it was) so had STS refurbish it which lost some gold but made it look 10 times better losing the rounded edges.

Just looked on my laptop to see if I have any photos, just the one old one....

i'd wager the true value is wearing a 3rd generation watch... congrats on getting it back on the wrist.
