Yeah, I didn't know watchbox had content. I always thought it was just a mid-level reseller like crown and caliber.

Likewise, but I did always find Tim Mosso’s video ‘reviews’ of watches he was selling weirdly compelling to watch … he struck me as a bit of a horological ‘Lloyd Grossman’… if watch people were famous in the real world, stand up comedians would be doing parodies of him ….

I didn’t know what Watchbox was until I read your post — so clearly this is good publicity for them. And Maybe they decided to compete with Hodinkee on its own terrain, while Hodinkee went from publishing to selling, they might be seeking to do the opposite to join them in the middle: promote their dealership with content. I just went to their website and it seems they’re primarily a dealership at this stage.

I remember Hodinkee when it first began and I found it interesting. But then it moved in a direction of watches that did not interest me so I moved on. Forums like this seem closer to how I like to talk about watches. I'm always happy to look at watches for sale, wherever they are, but ultra rare and expensive limited editions just don't attract me.

Actual watch journalism could be fascinating, but it’s a tough business. I don’t know how any site or publication resolves the tension between reporting on the industry and running a retail operation selling the same items. Forster is a legitimately good writer.

And Crown & Caliber is owned by Hodinkee.

Agreed, and for that very reason I would submit there is no such thing as watch journalism, except perhaps for general media outlets like Bloomberg and the New York Times, whose existence does not depend on kow towing to industry players.
Watch centric publications can be engaging and interesting, but their conflicts of interest clash with the core principles of journalism.
We’ve had discussions like this before, with Hodinkee being an extreme case.

I enjoyed re-reading that thread and seeing the clear ethical seriousness exhibited by you and @ConElPueblo and others.

Didn't want to start a new thread but I was just curious if Cole Pennington is still at Hodinkee? I no longer see him listed as a contributor with the others.

Cole provided some of my favorite content and videos.

I don’t actually know but I’ve seen it mentioned multiple times in Hodinkee comments that Cole recently left as well.

This was a reply in the comment section from one of his articles. It'd be a shame to see him go, he is definitely one of my favorite writers there.

" ... It's weird because I disappeared off the masthead without any sort of acknowledgement--so I get why folks are asking. Truth is I still have a few more pieces of content coming out here at HODINKEE! One I'm really stoked about. "

Thanks @Aroxx and @TwinPeaks

I hope Cole is still around and putting out new content. One of the few favorites left there for me.

Appreciate the replies.

Agreed, I like Cole as well. Especially since I found out he's a local Jersey boy and same exact age as me. I really enjoyed the series he recently did in Thailand especially of course the episode with the Omega collector (link below for interested parties). Sounds to me like he resigned but still has some stuff he already recorded coming out. Otherwise, he would have just said he's not going anywhere. Now we really are gossiping 😀

Agreed, this was a fantastic series and the episode above exceptional.

I'll miss his content if he leaves and will search out where he lands if he is indeed gone or leaving.

I suspect this is largely why they did this. it makes a big splash to announce that they are a blue chipper in terms of watch content.
