I don’t see anything wrong with him posting this. This is a friendly forum. Everyone is free to post and share what ever they like. I have had things that I thought no one saw but was posted on here. It is part of it all.

Some collectors have large budgets and can pretty much buy what they like, whilst others have much less. If I don’t have vast cash reserves but I’d still like a really nice vintage watch, then my only option is to put in lots of hours to hunt out a bargain. If everytime I find something it gets posted for all to see, then they're always going to end up in the hands of the wealthy guy. I think if someone spends the time to gather knowledge and track down a potential auction bargain, then they deserve to have a shot at it.

Now in this case I know Goodwill gets so much attention that this was never going to be a bargain, so posting it here isn’t really a problem. But obscure listings should, in my opinion, be kept away from public threads. The times I’ve found potential deals that didn’t interest me I’ve always notified members by PM.

One can see both sides to this. I’m not a wealthy guy. I’m a normal 29 year old guy that graduated college two years ago. I just feel that this is a friendly open forum. Anyone and everyone can post what ever they feel. I have lost some serious bargains on here me doing research. But I didn’t care. This is a community.

Then you should be on a forum that doesn’t allow allow eBay listings to be posted like TimeZone or PuristS. Doesn't mean it won’t be here.

There is no one who is a bigger bottom-feed than I. But if something gets posted, it gets posted. Can’t worry about it. Life’s too short.

You really want to find bargains, you need to go back to the old ways. Flea markets, Goodwill Stores (not auctions), etc. Good stuff is still found on occasion.

The simple fact is that there are no secrets on the internet anymore.

It’s not that I worry, like you say what can you do ? But I think posters of these threads could perhaps be a little more thoughtful in how to act. Creating a thread pulls everyone in... contributors, newbies, dealers, and so on. Why not search for a WTB request and PM a member who’s after the reference you’ve spotted, or search for similar references and see who collects them and PM them.

Because there are a lot of members here that don’t post a wtb and are still looking for the reference. Also as stated before. What is the problem of other collectors having a stab at it as well. This is a community of collectors. Not a community of sharks.

If we’re talking specifically about the watch in the OP then I pretty much agree because Goodwill listings have so many eyes on them anyway. But for hard to find listings my opinion is always going to be the same... try and help out those who’ve helped you, those who’ve asked for help (WTB), or those who contribute to the community at OF.

Somebody missed a big tax write off.
Depends. I can't deduct any of our charity givings due since they do not exceed 10% of income.

I think that if you've seen an online listing (auction or straight sale), be sure that many other people have seen it.
Ive been many times hopeful that I was "the only one" that had spotted a mistake in the auctioneers description, a valuable watch hidden in the background of a group shot, etc. Never happened.
The only time was when I found my No NASA 71 & the auction had not posted the caseback and only sent me a pic after calling them 3 times on the phone in order to have movement pics etc. And it was still not a bargain

I agree with w154 but also with Noles_88. We need to ask ourselves what is the intent of the post? In this case, I dont think the intent of the OP was to out the watch given the fact that goodwill already has tons of heat. In the other hand, if its really something unique, "saw this in such and such pawn shop" then I think the person should be a little more thoughtful in how to act. Like w154 mentioned, not all of us are filthy rich, and we sometimes do depend on that "find" my 2 cents.

Posting it here just made Goodwill some extra $$

Like the listing

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Condition: Item shows wear. Scratches, tarnish & embedded dirt present. Will require cleaning. Hands rotate when crown is pulled out and turned. Watch band is broken.

Watch does not run, may require batteries, parts and/or repairs. UNTESTED.
I just ordered some Speedmaster batteries from the Lady I am coaching for sex!

Can’t see anyone having a problem with that thread. Generally buy-it-now listings, and those that aren’t are well described anyway. My comments don’t refer to listings like these, or the OPs listing.

Only to the hard-to-find auctions, e.g. I’m glad no-one posted a link to this auction, and glad the OP got rewarded for his efforts.

The watch is at $6,000 and will probably hit $8500 when it sells. There is no indication whether the movement is shot or if it’s even been cared for. The Tudor 7928 isn’t even running at its already over 10k. The only reasonable deals on goodwill are for obscure Seiko’s and lesser known brands. You’d get a better deal buying a watch on this forum these days
