I actually do not care for gold watches. I trend twards silver and the moon.

It is really annoying to find a movement with no case. Who cares what the case is made out of.

Gold has no more value than bitcoin. One company went around the world and bought up all the big mines. I was surprised to learn this when I visited Homestake in SD in 2018. Homestake was one of the best clients I ever had.

Gold is not as scares as some would let you believe. The oceans are full of dissolved gold. This settles out in places like California and the other south American mountain ranges. Why there is so much illegal gold mining. According to the essayist John Macfee a new gold mine is opened every day. After big rainstorms in California people go into the rivers and pan for it.

Most gold shares are over subscribed. What they sell is sheets of paper with a number stamped on it.

The metal is useful in electronics (especially when lead is banned.) So there will be trace amounts in your cellphone.

If you really want a metal to invest in copper is much more used in the war efforts as the brass is used for cannons and shell casing.

lol! Sure, never mind that it has a proven record as a store of value over thousands of years; never mind that central banks around the world own huge amounts (it's the first asset listed on the ECB's balance sheet); never mind that it's classified as a Tier 1 asset; never mind that it is at, or near all-time highs in most, including all major currencies, etc., etc.

Arguing that gold watches should be purchased for other than the value of the gold content is something that we can probably all agree on, but the truth remains that their cases do have significant intrinsic value, and that will invariably lead to more orphaned dials and movements.

I’m not sure why there is hostility to our new member.

When I want to bid on a gold watch without a major collectible value, gold weight plus movement is exactly how I try to evaluate it.

Just because we don’t want to overpay should not be a blanket assumption that one is going to scrap the case.

Just my .02g of 18K gold’s worth,

Point taken, and as one approach toward valuation by an experienced collector it makes perfect sense.

However, as you know, there is often pushback towards a new member who makes absolutely no effort whatsoever to engage with the community, and joins only to demand a valuation. In this case, when the ONLY question a newbie asks is about gold content, it takes the fly-by valuation scenario to an extreme. No introduction, no context, no photos, no questions about collectibility, condition, originality ... nada. Just gold. He may not be a pawnbroker, but he sure acts like one.

I apologize for not being more welcoming to this new member, but the thread really rubs me the wrong way. As noted above, whenever the spot price of gold is high, vintage watches are irreversibly destroyed. I'm not inclined to facilitate that process.

Agreed. Maybe I am more optimistic than you.

Hello Dan. S. as I am new to this forum, I had no idea what was required of me to be able to ask a question, that I needed help with. For context, I am thinking about buying a vintage Omega, I so saw two promising watches, that I mentioned in my first and second post, I am new to this, I don't have a lot of extra cash, I was just trying to figure out which watch to buy 😀.
With a lot of the other possible questions like collectability, condition .... I didn't wanted to ask any of them, as the dealer who is selling the watches, has put most of these infos in his description and has a good reputation and gives 1 year warranty.
Sorry if my question has rubbed you the wrong way.
If you want me to post some pictures of the watches I am happy to do so.
Hope this is ok with you. I was just looking for help from people that I thought knew more than me.
Yours sincerely

Hello Don, Yes I agree, but knowing the gold weight helps to asses the value of the watch.
I can research most of the other factors, I was just looking for some help with the gold weight.

No it doesn't

C'mon Franco, of course it can. Not with more fashionable models in good (or better) condition, but there are countless gold watches in fair to poor condition which do not have values in the market exceeding that of the case.
