Look at the demand for all vintage watches right now, of which Rolex is the most well known world wide. The 2 highest auction results for Rolex all time were just set last week at over $5mil and over $3mil. Obviously most collectors or even people who are casually interested in watches cannot afford the truly high end pieces and these neo-vintage 5 digit references are a nice entry point for most. They have a lot of the vintage look without the crazy high price and are easier to service and more robust to wear daily. Much like speedys, the price will continue to increase exponentially for the truly exceptional examples while some will continue to overpay for marginal watches. The trick now is to be patient, be persistent, and be ready to pounce quickly when a nice watch at a good price shows up. One nice thing, is that unlike old speedys, Rolex made a ton of these watches and there will always be another one available for sale.

Watch Snob says there is a bubble. Good rant on the stupid hammer price on that Rolex calendar.

High, yes - bubble, I'm afraid no.
I am also keeping an eye open for a 16710 Coke. For me far more desireable than ceramic w/ new case. I think 16710 and 116710 used will stabilize on the same level.

Yes and it will continue to climb IMO. Every year that goes by without Rolex releasing a BLRO (Pepsi) or Black/Red (Coke) in the 6 digit GMT stainless line.....the prices will keep edging up. And the chances of that happening is actually pretty slim when all things considered....Not to mention the 5 digit references have a much better case proportion and the 16710/16700 could possibly be the most versatile modern piece out there with the interchangeability of bracelet/inserts. Certainly not a bubble, I would buy sooner than later.

I don't think there's a bubble. They are a similar price to the current GMT/Submariner, they are a much nicer design in most people's eyes and can still be found in almost-new condition if bought sensibly. They are also not making any more of them.

The only potential danger in my opinion is if Rolex made a U-turn by returning to a more elegant case design and began making the Pepsi insert available in stainless steel again. That might put some downward pressure on the 5 digit GMTs.

16710 is one of the most versatile modern sport watches made. Can easily swap out inserts with a wide array of options available to keep the look 'fresh'. The gradual price appreciation is a reflection of rising tide phenomenon which lifts all ships. This happens just to be a discussion on this particular reference, same could be said about others.

ive seen some ridiculous prices on rolexforums for sale section. im patiently checking because ive learned my lesson, but everything seems to be atleast $7k plus for most complete sets in good conditions. i could buy a fat lady around $5.7k no box and papers, but i prefer full set

I can only share my experience... I bought a 16710 unpolished tritium with original dial and hands, Coke, around 1995, full set from a trusted dealer I know well. Did I pay a lot more than what I could have paid 3 years ago? Yes, but far from the insane prices asked for the 3186, and still a 4 digit number. Why did I buy it? Because as far as I'm concerned, the 5 digits are the latest classics and they can still be used everyday (waterproof, safir, all parts available...). This one and the 16600 I bought new in 2005 are the 2 Rolex I will keep, so I wanted the 16710 to be perfect. The new models released do confort me in this opionion, I do not like the Rolex rehaut, fat ceramic bezels, polished center links, heavier and larger case, bigger indexes... I do understand what and why they do it, it is just not for me. So my thought process was to find the nicest 16710 for close to what I would have paid for a BLNR...
Just my 2 cents, this trend will continue, we are still below 10k and it will increase but slowly because it is not like it is a rare watch.

Compared to what I paid for my 16700 approx 10 years ago it's not a bubble, just a price increase.

In a year, you'll look back and wish you have pulled the trigger at $7K. Full sets were going for $5.3K about 2.5 years ago, waiting won't solve your problem.

same, i hate the changes for the 6 digits. all of mine are 5 digits, even the ones ive let go. the maxi case and maxi dial just makes it even bulkier on my small wrists. at this moment, im just holding out for holes case but SEL, 16710 LN or perhaps birth year which wouldnt make it too old

I'm amazed at the price rise of the 16710 over the last year. I sold a 16710 last year to fund a 16750 gloss dial. Since then the 16710 has risen about $1.5k while the 16750 has risen about $750 making them close in value now. I think the 16750 should be worth a lot more. It's a vintage with plexy crystal and open 6's and 9's which I think makes it a lot more desirable, but the market says otherwise.

The gloss 16750 has yet to catch the huge wave up like its matte dial brother. Only a matter of time as the gloss 16750 was only produced from 1983-1989 approximately. Plexi crystal, quickset date, vintage looks, it will rise quickly I'm guessing.

in retrospect, perhaps I should have bought 16710 first instead of 14060M, those are plentiful

with box and papers? ive seen absurd prices like $15k, for "mint" (its not) and its one example. usually higher $6ks, some in the $7k area. best price so far ive seen is a fat lady for around $5750 no box/papers by one of the usual sellers on TRF. Im really just trying to gauge how much I have to budget for a 16710 LN, (doesnt necessarily have to be the LN, I can always just purchase the bezel insert, so nbd)
