Details
Dial: Original, untouched glossy black dial with white gold surrounds. Tritium lume is displaying a beautiful creamy patina. Open 6 / 9 date wheel.
Movement: Cal. 3035 automatic. Serviced in September, 2017 (Invoice receipt to be included with purchase. Movement pic taken at watchmaker’s office pre-service).
Case / Crown: Original case in unrestored condition. Years of being worn in the field (original owner was in the timber industry) are beautifully marked on the case. Brushed factory finish is light but still present. Lugs and crown guards are thick and even. Serial and Reference numbers are crisp. Original crown.
Crystal / Insert: Sapphire crystal is clean but does show some minor nicks along the edge between the 5 and 6 hour markers. Original insert shows some scratches. Tritium pearl is a thing of beauty, it has no cracks and perfectly matches the creamy dial lume.
Bracelet: Original Rolex Oyster stainless steel 93150 bracelet with 593 endpieces and dive extension. Correct clasp code stamped I3. Bracelet is installed with 11 links with one extra included (never used).
Accessories: Inner & outer boxes, warranty paper with correct Serial Number, Officially Certified Chronometer tag, Your Rolex Oyster booklet dated 1985, 1000 ft / 300 m anchor, Rolex cleaning cloth.
Condition / Comments: Overall condition is very good. Watch shows wear from use but it’s been taken care of, that’s plain to see. This is a beautiful 16800 with a drop dead gorgeous dial. To the naked eye one sees a mid-80s glossy black dial, but when examined under a loupe with directed light, the transformation and imperfections of the dial can be viewed. The dial is in the process of becoming matte, most noticeably at the upper half of the dial and around a few of the WG surrounds, a faint line is etched above the handset/stem, another faint line can be seen on the minute track between the 2:00 marker and the cyclops. [Refer to the high-magnification photo to see this Submariner’s unique Wabi-Sabi]. A one owner watch prior to my acquisition, this 16800 (like all the other 5-digit Rolex sports watches) is increasingly sought after. Factor in that it’s a full set and it’s been recently serviced and this one ticks all the boxes.
