Here's a TR3 story.

As Mech Eng students in the late 1960s one of our class was the envy of all by owning a TR3. He claimed a top speed of 110mph maybe 115. At that that time I had a Mini van, which even after I'd modded the head and carburettor achieved about 70mph 馃檨 but I had a secret weapon. A Heuer chronograph. And the newly built motorway nearby (freeway/autobahn/autoroute) had markers at 1/10 mile intervals. No tachy scale on my Heuer but I could do the arithmetic in my head -- as I would hope any aspiring Mech Eng could.

So we set out after closing time at the pub in which we'd been arguing the top speed of a TR3. Perhaps not optimum.


We drive 15 miles north (well after dark) and I can't get a clear enough view of the 1/10 markers. 15 miles south and I still can't get a clear enough view. What I did get a clear view of was the blue flashing lights behind us as we pulled off the motorway. To our relief they stated that as the maximum speed at which they had clocked us was less than 100mph they were just going to give us a warning. Result! An elderly TR3 in uncertain state of tune couldn't reach 100 mph -- official 馃榿

Not mid-50s cars with an engine also used in a Ferguson tractor. Some say "originally designed for", others disagree.

Here's a TR3 story.

OK, my turn.

Mom & Dad had a TR3, it was their only car, when I was a wee tot. My brother and I would sit on the parcel shelf behind the seats. For you youngsters, this 1955-62 produced car was made before seat belts were mandatory in the USA.

All I remember about that car was the side curtains and that when Mom was driving us somewhere one day, I pulled the key out of the ignition. The car kept on running. She thought that was fascinating. That car (IIRC) was replaced by an XK-120, which I remember as being quite huge, and my mother getting pulled over for speeding. That car, the legend goes, went between my father and his brother, who owned it when the electrical system caught on fire. He gave it back to his brother. No word on if he was ever forgiven. My folks had a picture of me, around 4 years old, standing in the empty engine bay scraping paint. It had several coats of paint on it, all different colors.

I mean Mr. Bean wrecked his F1 TWICE and it was fixed both times.

Weeeeellll... I credit Rowan Atkinson with actually driving his cars and enjoying them, rather than having them collect dust in a warehouse. And I don't know the circumstances, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he probably wasn't drunk and acting the fool on a busy Manhattan street.

I've seen him on a general practice day at Snetterton racing circuit in his Nomex. I think he was doing the Renault 5 series at the time. Yeah, he's serious about driving his cars. So, that would be when I had my GRD Formula 3 -- over 30 years ago 馃檨

When I had an Astonishingly-Squealey Sprite (noob tax in sports cars?) my mother wanted me to drive her and a friend of hers somewhere and took the shelf behind the seats saying it was fine. She had been riding motorcycle pillions before WW2 so by comparison it may have been luxury 馃槑

All I remember about that car was the side curtains and that when Mom was driving us somewhere one day, I pulled the key out of the ignition. The car kept on running. She thought that was fascinating.

That would have been one of the locks that not only had the key number engraved on it, but also could be turned with a screwdriver after a couple of years wear. The key would come out without disturbing the electrical contacts at the back.

Guess who tried to pull his key out while driving to work this morning? 馃槜 Didn't come out, barrel must still be in good nick! One of my old series Land Rovers was so loose that the key would constantly fall out while driving. I miss that little Landy...

Saw this yesterday while I was getting a coffee. I glanced at it 3 or 4 times before I realized what it was. You don't see these in the wild very often.

Hah I just realized it was not actually Friday...not that it actually matters I guess.
But when I'm in the office wearing jeans and a polo...that means I have some days off coming up hah.

Technically I took this on Friday, but have only just got back from a spot wild camping with gallons of Malbec. First time it's been used in anger for large load lugging duties and it barely noticed all the kit.
