In case you missed the it today - Simon Freese has just launched the Freese 53, inspired of course by the Omega RAF '53.

Many of you in the UK have recommended his services and will know of his collaboration with William Roberts on the Freese 101. I was fortunate enough to see this new creation whilst on a visit this week to his workshop for a routine watch service - and it really is amazing. I wanted to post this to testify this is a real thing of beauty, the proportions of the case and detail of the dial are a thing to behold. Limited initial run, but plans to roll out more at a competitive price - frankly, I don't think there's a better watch available with this level of design, craftsmanship and expertise at this price point.

I really like Freese Watches, and what he is trying to do. I really wanted to like this model, but something is not quite right. I think it is the mil-sub hands.

I do wish people would give up on this faux-aged lume thing. It's obviously not old, and almost never attractive.

I like and respect what he is doing. I think it is a good way for him to leverage his skills into something more. But I am patiently waiting and watching for a release that speaks to me a little more.

Agreed. I would have actually liked this watch if it didn't try to be something it's not.

Dial layout: arrow below , not pointing at 12. Circle F between Freese and middle hole. Freese smaller Print. British and made printing better balanced between the 6. Numerals too small. The number 1 numeral in early British mil. Numerals are just one stroke. Not that little hiccup on top. The white printing more sharp and cream white. Not that faded as seen here. And: pumpkin lume is not good. Dark yellow makes all the difference from a design point of view. Sword hands are readily available from China, but why not invest a few bucks more to stick to the omega 1953 design? They make what you want. Just my 2 cents. Kind regards. Achim

I think it looks great, and also supports a local business and a great watch maker - looking forward to receiving mine!

I think it looks great, he's sold the first 5 with vintage movements already. Not sure it's quite as attractive at the price with the selita movement though.

I love my F101, which is my go-to watch in "any" occasion (read: when I don't know exactly what I'm going to wear because of this or that reason) - This one doesn't rock my boat as much as I am no issued watch buff, still I respect the work behind it. With zero knowledge of what the real thing looks like, I actually quite appreciate the looks of it, even the lume and the hands. If this is also worked the same way as the F101/102, the customer can pick the lume hue they like, so if you want more yellow and less pumpkin, just ask, and let the customers decide what they think of it! 😉

The 53 is but a step in the road toward Simon's goal of producing his own "English Watch". That is, a watch built by entirely by hand, and entirely in house. We used design pointers we liked, not to try and imitate anything, just to make us happy. We liked the look.

It is Simons effort to produce a watch that is appealing in a way other microbrands, (emphasise BRANDs) are not. One thing we can say is that it is a splendid effort by one man to create a unique watch based on his own hand work.

The dial is hand made in house - that means the plate is cut, feet welded, and the dial is then painted, printed and lumed, all by hand. Its not perfect. We can now make the dials perfect, but we dont. As simon put it, "I try to manage the imperfections to be appealing". I understand if its not to taste of some, thats ok.

We are looking at manufacturing more componants, and we have made progress on an in house case. Hands are surprisingly difficult to find a reliable source that can actually deliver. And try as we might, we cannot make them ourselves - yet,- though of course they are lumed in house.

So really this watch is part of a bigger story. We are not trying to make anyone buy this becasue it looks like something else - almost all watches today look like another brands watch.

Recently almost every time I visit Instagram there are a bunch of earnest bearded designers telling me they have produced a watch that is special in some way or another, only to present yet another mass produced item, often with a quartz movement.

These are five prototypes - the dials on four have been re printed, but mine was not. Because I like it.

All have sold, so the next available ones will be the December production.

Just wanted to fill you in with the back story.

I don’t care for the dial either. The fonts and the proportions are wrong, to my eye.

The outside track should be smaller (maybe just a lot thinner) and the numbers should be a touch larger and in a different font. ‘Freese’ should be in a light script. And the colored lume is too dark - a lighter color would have been a more subtle suggestion.

As an example, I think this is more successful:

I want to like Simon’s watch. And I envy all of you who claim him as your watchmaker.

Thanks for the insight @Spacefruit its great to see into the process. I’ve been lucky enough to have Simon work on my collection and I look forward to one day owning one of his own creations.
