I think it would depend on how common the watch was. I had a knucklehead manager for years and several years later, the thought of him still makes me cringe. If he regularly wore a unique watch I really liked, I'm not sure I could buy one. It would be like wearing Bill Lumbergh's watch.

Just wondering if this plays into peoples' buying decisions. For example, my brother-in-law owns a Moonwatch and it made me think twice about picking up the same model he had. I also had a terrible manager in the past that wore a ceramic pre-2018 Diver 300m and hence I could never pull the trigger on that model.
It does not matter to me.

We’re all human and susceptible to bias. I don’t necessarily want to be reminded of a terrible person who wears a certain model so I’d avoid it. I also prefer to have something that not everyone else has.

Thats true. The part of something everybody has influence me more in buying clothes and mostly in discount stores. For watches if it was for that very few people would have submariners so I am not so serious about.

I’m in the camp of I buy the watch for myself.

But if someone I knew had a signature watch, I might rotate in another if meeting them at an event...

On 2nd thought about rotation there is one person, my wife. I’d not wear the same watch family as her; my Tank Solo if she is wearing hers mini Tank Solo for example... not so much because I mind, but because she’s “dislikes matchy matchy” and the one person I’ll compromise for.

I am a snob in regards to a number of issues concerning this hobby and to me it does matter if I find out that a watch I own is also owned by a "a lot" of other people or by someone I don't care for.

I find some of the responses in this thread pretty odd; given some of the peculiar preferences and motives we as collectors have, why do you feel the need for bashing this premise? Is it somewhat worse than liking a watch because you associate it with someone you have a positive preference for? Or are both motives bad and only your own, completely independent appreciation matters?

I don't mind buying a watch that one of my relatives or friends already owns.
If I like , I will buy and when ever we meet and happen to be wearing the same watch I'll pass a compliment on what good taste they have.

I agree that it goes both ways, you can't bash negative motivation while ignoring the affirmative. I admit that I've got a Bond Seamaster and a Speedmaster at least in part because of their association with others. I want a Heuer Monaco partially because of the McQueen/Heisenberg association and I'm also fighting the temptation for a current Speedmaster because of all of the talk about price hikes, discontinuation, and scarcity. I think "completely independent appreciation" is hard to come by, so I was only half-kidding when I said above that I'm easily manipulated. I can justify it to myself because I'm aware of it.

It wouldn’t bother me to wear the same watch as someone I know, that said, most people I know wear watches that you toss away when the battery dies.

my mom used to go shopping with my best friend’s mom and occasionally we’d end up at school in the same gear. Even at 8yo it was rather cringeworthy.

I can see how it could be a bother to some. Personally I do like having an element of uniqueness and individuality to my collection. That said, if I really like something and want it, it wouldn’t bother me if I know someone else who has it.

If someone you don't like owning the watch prevents you from buying a watch, did you really like the watch to begin with? If I like a watch, I don't care who else has it.
