For watch purchases, does it matter to you if you know someone who already owns the watch?

I can recall a couple of occasions where I wasn't particularly interested in a watch, but when I saw it in person, it changed my mind and I ended up buying one. It had nothing to do with the identify of the person who had the watch.

Just wondering if this plays into peoples' buying decisions. For example, my brother-in-law owns a Moonwatch and it made me think twice about picking up the same model he had. I also had a terrible manager in the past that wore a ceramic pre-2018 Diver 300m and hence I could never pull the trigger on that model.
Yes, I could never buy a fluted bezel Datejust for the same reason. I used to think it was the cyclops lens, but I made my peace with that on my Oysterdate, and now I realise it is the memory of it on a colleague's wrist.

Many of us here get a kick out of seeing an identical Planet Ocean to our own on the wrists of our collective man-crush, Daniel Craig. Indeed, many of us bought P.O.s after seeing his abs-ness wearing one in some advertisement or other.

Denying these associations matter is folly.

I would never wear a dress made out of meat, simply because Lady Gaga has one.

As long as the price is right and I have the funds available my choice of watch will be determined by me not by what someone else wears, however I am more than happy to try-on a watch I like that is owned by a friend or by a relative to see how it looks on my wrist, if its a good look then i'm happy to buy.

The only criteria I have when building my collection is that I am trying to have a varied collection, avoiding watches that look the same.

If I like a watch and want to purchase , I’m gonna get it I don’t care if someone I know has one . If there is a watch I like and most people think it’s a turd I’m still buying .

If I liked the person? Nope. I mean, maybe, if the piece in question was something wildly esoteric and love-demanding, that I had devoted myself to acquiring and which was profoundly bound up in my sense of self -- but my sense of self is pretty accommodating I guess.

If I couldn't stand the person? Probs, since I would likely also decide that a numpty like that couldn't possibly have good taste in watches.

Fortunately, most of the people I know who like watches, are also people I like.

If that were a thing, no one would own a Rolex Submariner

Kinda. I bought an omega bc my friend, whom I respect as a collector, got really into omegas.

Nope.

My watch. My money. My taste. Other people's opinions are not in the equation.

A watch after all is an emotional purchase, so can understand how others having it (or past memories) can play a role in the decision process.

But if the attraction to the watch weigh more than all other factors, then there's really no stopping the chase, no matter what anyone says.

Like that one time [at Metallica camp] when you saw some dude wearing a modern Speedy Gonzales Moonwatch on an Omega replica NASA strap? 😁

I don’t see watches like women’s dresses, where if a woman goes to a party and sees another woman wearing the same dress she freaks.

Actually, I find it helpful if I know someone who owns a watch I’m interested in as I can get their opinion about the watch and where they bought it, etc. So, I guess watches are more like cars then dresses.

I do see where OP is coming from. I agree that the only thing that should matter is that you love the watch yourself, but I do think there is a risk of being seen as a copycat if you buy the same watch your bestfriend has. Your friend might see it as hero praise, nothing to worry about or a bit strange. I wouldn't feel the same way as buying the same car or pair of shoes but a watch is something quite personal for a man as we only generally get a single piece of 'jewellery' to wear each day (in addition to a wedding band perhaps).

Always found the saying 'the exact same' a curious expression.

the “exact same” watch would be the one his brother bought. another Hulk would not be exactly the same. It’s another watch. 😀

I buy the same watches as my enemies. Then I mentally link the two watches together to exert mind control. 🤪

If you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about this, I just might have the same watch as you..... 😒

I'd appreciate it if you would stop making me wake up at 3am to pee every night. Thanks.
