As a vinyl enthusiast & really enjoying this thread . I have a question to fellow hi fi enthusiasts, do you ever listen to or play anything on your super systems ,it seems more time money & effort is given to the set up than the enjoyment of actually listening to music .
I have two zones: home theater/ towers … use both daily. Both are capable of generating decibels that Mrs S tolerates for limited intervals. I have headphones for late night listening. Ironically my music cranking is done on my buddy’s vintage 70s era system in his basement. I’ve taken my upgrades as far as I’m going to. I love this thread too.

Still love to play and collect vinyl, try not to get upgradeitis, just enjoy what you have. Some of my system I’ve owned for 25 years and still sounding great, mainly Linn based, in fact Eva Cassidy blues alley is sounding fantastic tonight with a glass of red.

I actually hadn't for a while, because with the fibromyalgia, listening was fatiguing. Then I got the Parasound HINT-6, and OMFG....

For phono cartridges, I've abosolutely never had better than the Decca Mk IV... but these are better. 😀 http://www.london-cartridges.co.uk/

Oh the curse of the collector.
OMG, you won't need central heating then. I used to work on these many years ago. Don't let the UK health and safety police see this.

Both, but mostly it’s about the enjoyment of the music for me. There is also much pleasure to be derived from putting together and upgrading the system, though.

I agree with this completely, having developed more than a few systems over the past 40+ years, and the process is always enjoyable.

Exactly … I’m in B&W world and they are always needling me with upgrade teasers. I’m learning to ignore.

I get them all the time as well...not for speakers, but for headphones.

Headphones are relatively easy to get into the endgame. Headphone amps though…..

I've not changed my system in 20 years. Except for some cables ... Every serious upgrade would be expensive for maybe 3% better outcome. I'm happy with what I have and keep it that way. Had many different set ups in the past . From everything Accuphase to mixed hardware . As it is now. It's vinyl focused , still over 800 LP's from the mid 60's - end 90's. Rock, Jazz, Classic. All better vinyls went after purchase straight into Nagaoka anti-static sleeves. No static, no scratches. Most sound still amazing. Bought a few Japanese special pressings as well , used to bring them to Speaker tests.....Speakers are Yamaha 1000M with Berrylium speakers from the 80's. Crossovers rebuilt. They determine the Amps. Everyday Amp is Quad 909. Amp for listening to more Nuances is a custom built Tube Amp , 2x 65 RMS/8 ohms. Pre amp a refurbished Holman Appt , which sounds very good. Designed in the 80's to show these pesky Japanese.... Record player a big Kenwood 7010 with right Arm for the MC Benz SL Wood. Hafler pre amp. CD is Arcam 135. Cassette Nakamichi BX 300E. Tuner Yamaha T 85. All that balances the very analytic/ Studio like Sound of the Yamaha 1000 M. Works well with all kind of Music for me.

Relatively easy to get into but costs can add up quickly. About two years ago I started down the headphone rabbit hole, now have two Focal cans (an open back and a closed back) and a Feliks Euforia tube amp.....about $5k all up.

Nice kit.
You are right not inexpensive but imagine similar costs for speakers and amps.

You already are at the pinnacle with them. Guess headphones are all they can tease you with.

Mine for 150 bucks today (I thought about starting a ‘What HiFi Did You Buy Today’ thread … if this post should rather go there someone PM me and I’ll delete this and start that)

How did I do? Oh, I know it’s a bottom feeder in the audio food chain …and an AV receiver to boot …however I bought it as a multi channel amplifier (I think as far as AV signals go, AppleTV 4k is hard to beat) and thus to connect a Toslink (i think that’s the name for the digital optical cable) source and have more speakers in my lounge than the two I have currently enjoyed the last 15 years … now about those speakers … all ideas welcome!

Imagine my astonishment when I discovered the Apple AirPods Max sounded like my speakers!

Honestly, with the way AV is changing all the time, staying cheap is not a bad Idea. I have a top of the line Rotel receiver that I bought as open stock at my local dealer. It works great as an AV machine and the heart of my 2 zone system but it won’t process 4K. I’m not sure what I will do when my TV craps out. I’m not sure I will go that high again.

I want to share my experience with Parasound, and it's a good experience.

Their devices are stellar. I recently bought the HINT-6. Wow does not cover it.

If you email their support? It's not unusual for their CEO to reply. Richard Schram is a good person and will help where he can.

Even their older equipment is worth having.

Worth a look if you need something.

Yep Toslink, I always tell people that you can not go wrong with Yamaha audio equipment (including musical instruments) they are the god of high end consumer product and commercial equipment too.
Really one of the only the only surviving top end Japanese manufacturers, I bow in obeisance, Hail Yamaha, too over the top? not really, their specs are real.

I agree about Yamaha … its great gear.

Hello to all, I’m relatively new to OF and just found this thread. I put together my first audio system in 1961 which is also the year I acquired my first Corvette. All these years later, many Corvettes and sound systems later I’m still into these and other hobbies including my watches. This is my current audio system. I started in the 60s with valves, moved to solid state or sand in the 80s and I’m now back to tubes, which for me, provide me with the most satisfaction.

I'm enjoying searching through OF for the many different and informative threads. 😀
