Love the LS3/5as, and have owned quite a few over the years, including an original set of the Rogers' versions, and have a real soft spot for the wonderful imaging and tonality they can produce.

Congrats -- they are wonderful speakers, even if they do take some driving.

I have a set of early Spendor 15ohm. They have a clarity of mid range tone that very few speakers can match.

you guys have some very impressive gear ! Maybe you can give me some advise...
My 20 + year old Arcam CD player needs to be replaced as the laser is failing and I don't want to repair it. With things openning up I went to a few stores and could not believe the lack of knowledge that the salespeople had about the products they were selling. I listen with a NAD C370 amp (100 wattRMS) through PSB T2 speakers with Nordost wiring. I'd classify it as highend mass market system.
My question is which CD player(s) will be of sufficient quality to not be the weak link in my system. I bought a NAD C 546BEE and its just not good enough. I guess I have 2 options really
1. the 546BEE has an optical out so I could get an external DAC
2. sell the 546BEE and get something better
If you think its best to go get something better, what CD players do you think I should consider?
I will let my ears decide but any help ( from a non salesman ) would be much appreciated

Thanks

Check this manufacturer out, I have used some of his gear and it is just superb.
http://www.audio-gd.com › Product... Web results Products - audio-gd

With his dac's you can use almost anything as a transport as the digital signal is reclocked before it enters the dac's processing path.
Great build quality and value for your dollar.

Many of the early Arcam Alpha CD players used Burr Brown multibit DACs (Alpha One & 7/7SE for example) which had a characteristically warm, full sound as opposed to the delta sigma ‘single bit’ DACs of the time (NB personal opinion 😉). Most modern DACs are delta sigma so it would pay to check out some hifi forums to see what modern DACs get close to the classic Burr Brown sound. I’ve been out of the game for too long now, but I have a similar issue where my old chunky Luxman CD player is playing up, new machines don’t sound crash hot, and I still have plenty of discs to listen to...

At least I just installed a new cartridge on my turntable which is making me get back into my record collection with a big smile 😁

What model is the Arcam? While @rob#1 has covered the lower end models, 20+ years ago (depending on how many the + actually is) is around the time that Arcam started using the dcs RingDAC in the higher end models. The Apha 9 CD that I had used this, and I bought it when it first came out, which was in 1998 I believe. They also used it in the fmj line that came after the Alpha series. The dcs ring DAC was very impressive for it's time, and allowed the Arcam units that used it to "punch above their weight" in terms of the sound to price ratio.

You might be able to find an fmj in good condition that would sound better than some cheaper options now.

I have a soft spot for Arcam products...owned Delta, Alpha, DiVA, and fmj models through the years - great stuff. Still have an fmj DVD player, and I've read that some of those sound better than the Arcam CD players did from that same time frame, due to better isolation in the cabinets, so that is an options too.

Cheers, Al

The newer Parasound DACs give my upgraded Stax DAC-Talent some stiff competition!

You can buy a new transport mechanism for <$20, and it's usually a very easy DIY swap. Might be worth a try.

Thanks. I really did enjoy it and plan to get a suitably "warm" replacement. Enjoy the music !

Thanks for more chip info.
Well ...... more like 25 years I enjoyed the Arcam ! It was an Alpha One. It was a game changing player in my system, only broke once in 30 years and still "works" for 30 minutes until the lazer messes up. What CD player did you end up with ?

After my Alpha 9 died I ended up buying a used Linn Unidisk 2.0, but a few years ago I switched to streaming, so now have a Linn Klimax DS.

I've done a similar thing to Archer... I ripped all of my CDs to my Mac and then stream to the AppleTV. I basically use my HDTV as a switch, because this way everything can go through my upgraded Stax DAC-Talent and into the main stereo system. A lot of what you can get on Apple Music is lossess-ly encoded, too.

When my CD player died a couple of years ago I ripped everything to .wav files. I saved them to my computer and from there onto a 256 gig SD card that have in my phone. I have a bluetooth speaker at work and a bluetooth receiver hooked up to my stereo. For me it is the most convenient way of keeping my cd collection. I've been happy enough with it that I've started ripping my cassettes to .mp3 using my old Walkman hooked up to my computer.

Update’s finally decided to go into the 1200b. Needed to get to the volume pot issue. So I found the pot, loose so I re soldered it. Then I started to check again and basically I was to the first day, no sound. Only if I bypassed the preamp, but I already had sound just a crappy volume pot. So I printed schematics, traced and checked voltages and things that were fine, now were way off. I stopped a couple of times then I read something about the DBT, checked that but the voltages got better. But no sound, so I opened everything up and started to check and bam found the problem.
I put everything together fast and left the standoffs off, on purpose but what happened was that at least one of the boards wasn’t properly seated. The re-flow fixed the volume issues. I already got the missing knobs coming. Then proper testing, with scope and all that. Then the obligatory recap, cosmetics in and out the a custom cabinet. I’m actually checking a 105b in a couple of days. The turntable on top is a AR XA 1968~, that one is going to get a resto-custom soon including a new plinth built by me next year. I’m trying to get a hold to some very speakers, but the guy is out of town (Europe) another couple of weeks maybe longer.

Well after two weeks of going around and around. Finally got to see this, local buy no hassles, shipping or tax, also you can exactly what you are getting. Looked super clean, didn’t want to look too excited. But is super clean in every aspect. Definitely a keeper, also matches the amp.

Looks lovely and if it matches your amp even better. I have a Fisher 500C Receiver which has a great tuner section.

The downside is I live 60 miles form the main transmitter at Sutton Coldfield so even with a 5 element roof top Antiference aerial reception was weather dependent. Now I don't use the tuner section at all but get all radio via Logitech media Server and a Pi running Picoreplayer. This gives me audiophile radio quality for main stations like Radio 3 plus access to virtually any radio station worldwide.

Enjoy the tuner!

The 500C is on my list, if I can find one locally I have the 500T. To be honest, I like my HK 500X more, the plan is for a custom build pre and some monoblocks.
