So I own a 2024 first omega in space that I call the CK2998-8 as it's really a continuation of that reference.

I showed it to my Dad and he said he couldn't believe that's what watches looked like in 1962. He said looks very modern and not vintage at all.

So that's my question. Can you help my Dad understand how close it actually looks to a brand new factory fresh watch if you walked into an Omega shop in 1962?

Here's some gratuitous pics just for fun.

These are close, but not quite. There's already a thread here somewhere with side by side comparisons.

Yeah, side-by-side with a 64 year old watch isn't quite the same as side-by-side with a brand new watch from 1962. In other words, if we could time travel to 1962, go into an omega store and look at a ck2998 Speedmaster, what would it look like?

Three white sword hands instead if one shiny sword and two white straight ones are the most obvious difference to me. I'm wearing my new one right now in fact.

Funny thing happened today. A coworker who knows I am into watches sent me a link to the FOIS on Omega website saying he really wants one. I replied "I'm wearing it" and he came running back to see it.

Umm the biggest difference is that the lume in 1962 would be white, not pumpkin beige. Your dad probably thinks it daft that people think more of reissues of patinated vintage watches than versions like the original 2012 FOIS or current Moonwatch which have whiter new looking lume.

That said I own a FOIS2 and original Ed White so clearly I see the appeal...

I’ve got a couple of 2998s, and I agree the fois is very similar. I like the colored lum and do not see a problem with appreciation of the new and old.

Other than the bracelet, 99% of the population would not see a difference between an original 1962 2998 and the new one.

My wife didn’t understand why I wanted a standard Speedmaster Pro when I already had the older FOiS model - “It’s the same watch!” And there are a lot more differences between those two.
