Flea market find cal. 285–thoughts?

Hi all,

Today I bought this Omega on a flea market for €15: for that kind of money it’s worth a gamble!

Once home, I opened the case back and discovered a 285 movement and an 18,711,xxx serial number, which dates it back to 1961 according to Chuck Maddox.

The movement seems in decent condition, even though it doesn’t run well. I thought I’d post it here, because the dial raises some questions for me: there’s no ‘Swiss made’ text at 6 for instance. Otherwise the dial looks OK, with the signs of wear you’d expect. The plexi is in terrible condition though—which really shows in the photo below.

I look forward to hearing from you guys!

I think that’s an awesome find for 15€ !. I don’t know much about that specific watch/model, but I have always wanted a cal. 285.

Great buy! Where do I find flea markets like that?
Rotterdam, the Netherlands, my friend! It was lying in a box full of old swatches and Guess/Adidas/other crappy quartz watches. My lucky day, I guess...

The scratches will buff out of the crystal. It is the original - you can just about make out the Omega symbol in the centre.

That was one hell of a bargain. Perhaps it's just me, but I enjoy something twice as much when I've paid next to nothing for it!

Added: The Swiss Made is probably there, just out of sight under the tension ring. And one serious collector on another forum said that in his opinion the 285 is Omega's best ever centre seconds movement, which can't be bad.

What a steal!

The movement looks in good cosmetic condition. The dial looks good as well. On a 285 I would expect a Swiss or Swiss Mede, but I think I can see it through the glass on one of your pic.

Yep, there is a pretty clear "SWISS MADE" visible at the bottom of the dial 😀

Good find, @jaspers 👍
