First Vintage Purchase

Hey Guys!

I'm looking at dipping my toe in the vintage watch pool and purchasing my first vintage Omega. I've been doing some research (very rudimentary) and browsing through Chrono24 and alike looking for watches that interest me.

So far the references that I really like are: 166.010, 168.024 and 168.005

Really I was wondering if any of you have any general advice for me on my first purchase and also if there are any other similar references that you recommend I look at?

Thanks in advance!

Search this Forum on those references and read and look at all pictures of confirmed originals.

google those references and learn what original ones look like

avoid that particular buying site unless you can spot original from a less than original at 10 paces

read the sticky, “Learn How To Fish” on this forum

post pix in this forum for help PRIOR to purchase.

welcome

we all started where you are at right now.

@TexOmega Gave you a perfect answer.

I'll quickly mention a few important details about the models you mentioned.

166.010 & 168.024: Are pretty much the same watch, except the 168.024 is Chronometer rated. Therefore it is a little less common and more expensive. Either way, condition is everything. You can find plenty of threads about these specifically.

168.005: These can be really tricky because there are pretty good fakes coming out of Vietnam. Definitely DO NOT purchase one of these without posting about it. I bought one before posting it and consensus was that it was pretty much a fake/franken and I got really lucky and was able to return it.

I would also recommend that you check out the 168.022 and 166.028 . This model was my first vintage purchase and I think they're great. One is chronometer rated and the other one isn't.
