First time vintage buyer. Advice on a particular watch greatly appreciated

Hello all,

I have decided that a vintage Omega is going to be my next purchase and I’m very fortunate to have stumbled upon this forum.

I have been searching for the right piece for weeks and am very close to pulling the trigger on this one.

Does the dial look original? Seems like it’s in excellent shape.

Any feedback / advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you in advance

Thanks for sending this. It shows in the database that the case is 18k gold, but the seller did not mention anything about it being solid gold. Is there a chance that Omega offered this style watch with gold-plated as well?
The chances are very good. The vintage database seems to offer one version of most of them, and watches could have been stainless, gold fill, or solid gold, in various colors.

Plus, if you have a case number like 166.010, add the second zero, as 166.0010. Sometimes you leave the dot in, sometimes you take it out....

welcome @Jbier77

The pics aren’t great however, dial looks to be fine but the case is quite well polished.
The lugs should have clearly defined facets (you can see them on the pic @gatorcpa posted)
Constellations like this were supplied in sold gold, SS and gold cap (not plated or filled)
This is the latter and while gold capped watches are never as sharp as say SS, this one is soft.
The medallion is heavily worn too.

So, it depends on what you are looking for and of course price.
if it is a good deal and you aren’t looking for a sharp piece it might be worth picking up.

There are quite a few Constellations to chose from, so a couple of questions
what attracts you to this specific reference of watch?
Did you particularly want a day date?
Were you after a gold watch?

A final note
These references of constellation haven’t reached their market yet and you can still pick up really nice versions at significantly less cost than other Constellation references, so you shouldn’t be overpaying for anything other than a mint example.

Watch case shows some polishing, look at the lugs and the medallion on the caseback.

The eight stars on the medallion should clearly be visiable

Lugs should look like that (Picture from @Peemacgee)

It may just be the image quality, but the stars on the medallion look mullered.

And most of the edge of the medallion have been polished away.

Thank you for the response! Would you say $900 is overpaying for this piece? My budget has been slowly increasing, the more I dive into these watches lol. I’m not set on a Connie as I was originally planning on getting a Seamaster. I would like the watch to have some gold accents however not completely gold. Day date is not important.. I just thought the Dutch day was really unique.

My absolute dream watch is a pie pan but not sure if I could realistically get one in decent condition for under $1500

I can scoop this one up for under $1000, but this looks to be a redial to my untrained

very, very, heavily polished, incorrect crown and yes, a poor redial.

the best advice I can give is to decide which watch you want.
If it is a Constellation then try to pin down which reference and focus on that.
Pie pans come in various case styles and this watch is a dogleg and very different to the watch you originally posted.
E.G This is a similar (slightly earlier) reference to the watch you posted but with a pie pan dial.
(and this is what the lugs should look like)

That watch is a pretty dire example. I do not want to sound impolite but if you think it looks good, you are not ready to buy a vintage Constellation. The competition is hot, the bad watches outnumber the good ones and without some serious study you are likely to buy a watch that you later regret. You need to at least have some idea of what you are doing before buying. There's no quick safe way unless you get very lucky.

If you can tell something is wrong here, you are already better at this game than 80% of new collectors 😁

Don't worry, do your research, go where other collectors don't and play the waiting game.

Hello Gents,
After much consideration, I have fallen in love with the pie pan style and prefer the dogleg lugs.

also not sure if I should be bumping this thread vs making a new one so please let me know if this is out of line.

please see pictures below and let me know your opinions on it. Looks pretty good to me, besides the obviously scratched crystal.

Looks pretty nice (despite too much polishing 🙁)

How much is the asking price?
