First Seamaster 166.010 - Opinions?

Hi OF,

Always been intrigued by vintage Omegas and decided recently I'd add my first when the right piece comes up. The 60's Seamasters with the dauphine hands and 5xx caliber movements really stand out to me, the 166.010 being at the top of my list. Also wouldn't mind something in solid gold or gold capped as it matches more of my formal jewelry.

After lurking the forums and marketplaces for one about a month now, this example came up in what appears to be nice condition but upon inspection raised a few questions as to its originality. Pics attached below.

My questions to the experts:
1) Is this a redial? To my untrained beginner eye something about the boxiness of the U in the AUTOMATIC is something I haven't noticed on others of this reference
2) Being advertised as 14k gold filled, however case back and surface behind lugs appears to be SS like a gold capped. Could this be an error on the seller's part or can factory gold filled of this reference have this two tone finish?
3) (Maybe previous question answers this) Is the case back original? The finish on the surface and beneath the Seamaster logo as well as the way 166.010 is stamped looks different than any examples I have seen in my research thus far.

If you have other opinions outside of those points on the watch itself I'd be grateful for your feedback. Looking forward to learning more about this reference and similar as I continue my search for the right watch.

-Thanks

Hi Matt,
And welcome to OF.
I’m not an expert on dials but I can’t see anything that alarms me about the hands, dial and crown.
All filled/plated watches have a steel case back so no worries with that.
The case appears damaged on the rim nearest the 4 indices.
The bracelet is aftermarket and horrible and may have damaged the inside of the lugs.
Obviously we all have different preferences but gold capped watches are generally less sought after nowadays.

It looks ok to me. Gold cap, not gold filled. The case back looks like it has been grinding. Compare to my case back below

I can't see any issues with the watch. Some wear as expected and maybe some caeback polishing.
The first thing to do is to shitcan that bracelet so that it doesn't chew holes in the gold cap on the lugs.

It's a nice watch and will look great on a leather strap (NOT one of those two stitch horrors!).

Good to know, appreciate all the info.

The bracelet is definitely and eye sore and would be the first thing to go lol.

You’re right, missed that damage. Looking closer seems to be either a bad dent or a chunk from the edge of the rim gone. Had thought it was just the light or a hairline scratch reflecting.

Dial looks redialed to me.

I thought that but then thought it may be the photo lighting and angle and in one photo thought there might be dial damage between 2-4 and in another that an indice was missing in the 11-12 sector but the other photos didn’t show that and I took the view that these were poor photos and that the watch face was okay.

Apart from the minor damage at 4, I don’t think it’s bad and it doesn’t look like a hard worn watch to me.

Looks OK to me but the bezel was removed and put back incorrectly. It is not a ding at 4, it is the indentation for the crown... also the fine ring inside the back tells us that the rotor has rubbed against it and is likely worn.

So, add the price of a proper service if you buy it.

Perfect, thanks!

That makes more sense now.
