First Omega: PO 39.5, or Diver 300M midsize?

Sure. Here’s a few more pics. It wears bigger than my Speedmaster Reduced (38mm case) but not too big. My wrist is 5cm across so I need a lug-to-lug measurement of no more than 50mm to avoid ir looking stupid. PO manages that ok.

Thanks! Looks really great - I’m super excited to try this on now!

I don't think you would be doing wrong with either, but if you are in beater mode, I might go with a midsize SMP, and maybe even a quartz until you are sure of what works best for you.

An additional consideration for midsize would be your height (not just wrist size).

Thanks for the input! I’m definitely not tall, but hadn’t really thought about this - I’m not sure how I’d measure / quantify this - I guess just look in a mirror when I try it on and see if I like it...?

I will see if I can find some quartz models to see how expensive they are as an interim option (I assume they are cheaper?)

At risk of oversharing.... I ordered a watch off eBay to check the size (pics below) - it’s 40mm diameter, 46mm lug to lug, height 13.3mm, so comparable proportions to the PO - I think this looks ‘fine’ (i.e. not too big) - I quite like the ‘wrist presence’ and sporty look the larger size gives actually - not something I’d probably wear with a suit, but I think it could be great with a polo short at the weekend...

Thoughts welcome!

Sorry, one more thought / question - how scratch resistant are the bezels on both models - is one ‘better’ than the other in this respect? Thanks!

The PO 39.5mm since it is ceramic. The old seamaster mid has an aluminum bezel.

One thing to consider is that the mid size 300m is considerably thinner too than the PO when on wrist. I used to like chuncky watches but it wasn't until I tried more refined thinner watches that I appreciate the look and comfort.

Now chunkier watches seems silly to me on my wrist.

Thank you - yes, this is something I'm definitely considering. Do you think the watch in the pictures I posted above is too chunky - it's a similar size to the PO 39.5...

I think it looks good on your wrist, you can definitely pull it off. I used to love that look, but not for me anymore.

Its all about what you think and feel about the watch. Because at the end of the day, you will be wearing it.

I can understand how you can be undecided. You will be happy with either watch. But think of it this way, if you want wrist presence, go for the PO. If you desire comfort and versatility, go for the 300m.

Or do what I did, buy a completely different watch. 😁

I had every intention to buy a new Seamaster 300m and went home with a Speedy Pro.

I am going to try on the PO when UK lockdown allows - appointment booked! Will hopefully be able to see the 300M midsize at the same time, stock allowing.... Can’t wait to try them on and see how I feel about them in real life!

In virtual life, I think I am leaning towards the PO due to the scratch resistance aspect and my not feeling super confident about the second hand buying process (I’ll get over that one day, just maybe not when a key feature is being waterproof....!). So, I think the deciding point will be whether I think I looks too big or not - I quite like the ‘wrist presence’ of my pics above.

Your versatility comment did get me thinking again though....! I think my other watches (Rolex YM ref 126622, Datejust 36, and Hamilton Intraday-matic Classic (I won’t mention my Apple Watch on a forum like this.... 😬)), have most situations covered, so it’s really just a nice diver / beater I’m missing.... For now at least......!! 😉

Regarding this, firstly, 😁🙄....! I’ve actually ‘decided’ a couple of times that I’m just going to get a Speedy Pro, this being my first Omega purchase and all.....! But then I remember it’s not water resistant, and I come back to these two....! 😵‍💫

I dont even swim with my Seamaster or any of my watches so choosing the Speedy was not an issue for me. Besides, my watchmaker pressure tested it to 100m and passed. The closest its going to get to water is when I wash my hands and being in the rain which wont be an issue.

You should not fear buying a 50m rated watch if you like it. It's still more water resistant than a 500k Patek thats rated at 30m! 😵‍💫

And remember, there are many vintage watches that doesnt even have any waterproof rating that are still ticking today. So a 50m rating is adequate for every day wear unless you swim with it or use your watch for diving.

I cringe even seeing a drop of water on the crystal of my 300m rated Seamaster. 😁

Haha! Mine is for playing with my two young boys in the evening and at the weekends, and for going on holiday (read Legoland splash park rather than laying on a sun lounger in the Caribbean...!) so I'm definitely looking for something less precious than a 500k Patek....! 😁::psy::

Hi there. I think you're going about things the right way by being patient and waiting to try on both the PO and SMP midsize before making a final decision. I think you'll know straight away as soon as you see "the one" and try it on for size.
I can vouch for the SMP midsize. It was my daily wearer for many years and a very versatile watch. Still use it on holidays when I need a watch I can wear to the beach, water parks etc but still looks dressy enough for dinner at a nice restaurant. Good luck with your search!

Oh yes, if you want to see what it looks like on a 6 inch wrist as well here's a pic (forgot to post it yesterday. Sorry!)

Tried on PO 39.5, SMP Midsize (36mm), and the Seamaster 300M 42mm today.... and the outcome was.......

I’m super happy with it, I think it’s a beautiful watch, and the size really suits me and what I’m looking for!
