Between the DON bezel and stepped dial I choose the new 3861 and I love it.
Yes, it was "stiff" winding at first but as it loosened up it wound more smoothly.
Now it winds freely and over 60 hours power reserve. Time keeping is spot on.

Interesting mod. Where did you get the display caseback from and did it have the engraving already on it?

there are many casebacks designated for CK2998 cases ok the market but I got mine from spiralwinder.com

engraving is custom made with laser by local engraver here in Warsaw

I never felt winding on my 3861 was stiff even from the very beginning. I can’t imagine how it could’ve been any smoother without feeling too loose. The winding on my Navitimer, that’s “stiff”. Good thing it’s a self-winding watch or I would’ve lost my fingerprints 😉

The 3861 is harder to wind than the 1861, but I wouldn't call it stiff. The Navi with the in house B series movement is definitely stiff!

Maybe you've been lucky. I find my Snoopy 3x harder to wind than my FOIS, and not just because of the crown guard.

Of the two options, as others have mentioned, aesthetics aside, the lack of hacking and chronometer features on the FOIS can be a deal breaker for many. I own an 1861 Pro and while I love the watch, the lack of hacking is very annoying. Additionally, I would argue the crown guards on the Pro serve a functional purpose - I am very cautious to not catch the pushers accidentally. The exposed setup on the FOIS was a factor in me not deciding on that model. Good luck, either way it'll be a great watch.

1861/861 watches and indeed even the 321 will back-hack just fine at less than 3/4 reserve. Try it when your reserve is low and it will work. Once the time is set, then fully wind and voila an accurately set 1861.

Yep, that's what I do. My FOIS loses less than a minute per week, and I don't really sweat the accuracy with it -- its charms lie elsewhere, IMO. I just pretend it's vintager-vintage, and enjoy everything else it brings to the table. But the new 3861s are very, very nice watches. Superb update, IMO.

I know there are many in favor of the FOIS in this thread, and I do indeed like it very much as well, but of the two, I chose the 3861 (though I got the Hesalite) and I really like it a lot. I like having the new bracelet and I actually think the 3861 wears slimmer despite slightly larger real estate on the wrist. I'm not entirely sure if it is actually slimmer, but the curve of the lugs on the Pro makes the mid-case look thinner, therefore feel slimmer. The new bracelet is polarizing, but I LOVE it.

Additionally, I prefer the pencil (?) hands to the Alpha hands. And the movement is extremely accurate. I'm getting +0.4 seconds a day last I checked.

The only thing I prefer on the FOIS is that it actually wears a bit more compact, which is odd because the dial and bezel dimensions are actually the same, the 42mm vs 39+mm have to do with the asymmetrical crown guard on the pro vs no crown guards on the FOIS (as I understand).

Received my FOIS and needless to say it is a beautiful thing. Love the more vintage style and slightly dressier nature of it.

However, I can’t help but shake the feeling that it feels a fair bit thicker on my wrist than than the 3861 Pro did. I usually prefer my watches to be on the thinner side - when I tried the 3861 on in the boutique it didn’t strike me as being at all thick.

Am I making this up? Or is there a actual reason why it feels that way?

I think you might be right about this!

Congratulations on your purchase @timmyk86 and wear it in good health. It looks great on your wrist.
Yes, from what I've heard the FOIS is a bit thicker than the Speedy Pro and that's mainly due to the commemorative case back. In your pics though, it looks just fine as the gap between the leather strap and your wrist is minimal. No worries.
Oh yes, and don't forget to post your pics on the FOIS roll call thread together with the watch's limited edition number.

Thanks. Very kind of you to say.

I don't know, I just don't quite feel like it's 'me' yet and I don't know why. As opposed to the 3861 which I put on and thought yes - I want this.

Height? Strap too dainty? Don't know - haven't worked it out yet. Either way - it's basically unworn so not a bad investment if I do decide to change.

Anyone else have a similar feeling?

You can swap the case back with a thinner display aftermarket one.
And I'd also recommend a Forstner flat link bracelet.

+1 for the Forstner flat link.
I've got one and it makes the watch a lot more comfortable to wear.

+ 2 on the Forstner, or indeed a Fluco rally strap, If you're sticking with leather. I don't mind the OEM, but it just never seemed to wear right on my 7" wrist. Seemed both too short and too dainty, and never got comfortable with it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ve got a deployant strap coming in the post so will give that a try tomorrow and see how it feels.
I did pop into an AD today and tried the 3861 with the cordura strap. It felt much better on my wrist - snugged down better and felt thinner. I think the end result of this might be that I end up swapping the FOIS out for a Pro - albeit a SS on leather.
Comparison pic just for reference (shamelessly stolen from another thread).
Appreciate the thoughts - keep them coming!

FOIS imo looks better. Mine has a vintage service caseback (which is definitely thinner), Forstner flatlink, and Omega clasp (better fit than Forstner) and it fits great. Extremely comfortable.

Nice to see you opted for the FOIS. Can’t beat the applied logo. I believe the Hesalite 3861 doesn’t have one.

Yeah, it might just be the strap. Hopefully I'll be able to figure that out later today when the deployant I bought arrives.

Agreed, and that is probably my main hesitation about swapping. But I know that even as good as it looks, with the way it currently feels on my wrist I probably won't wear it much. As this is an engagement/wedding present, I want it to be something I wear often. Ideally, except for straps, I'd probably want to keep it as 'stock' as possible.

Correct - 3861 Hesalite has a printed logo. I'd probably go for the sapphire on leather which has an applied logo. Surprisingly did really like the cordura strap though!

SS leather on my wrist:
