Father-in-law's 1960's Seamaster

So I was visiting my father-in-law and he says - "You know, I purchased an Omega watch while I was in the service in 1962." I asked him to show it to me. Wow, box, hang tag and the watch is in incredible shape. He wears a Rolex DJ so this one just sits in his drawer. I would have loved to buy it from him but it was obvious that he still is emotionally attached to the watch even though it just sits in his dresser. Cool watch. I have no idea if it is considered rare or not. It doesn't matter, he likes it. Still runs, never serviced.

wow - cool watch!!
Omega Seamaster Automatic from early 60s, with that lovely hooded-lug, gold case + two-tone dial look.

Is it desirable? Heck yeah, fooor sure - original dial, gold case, bracelet, and one-owner with box and hang tag is really rare and desirable. I guess it’s not a “sell the house” rare grail, but it’s Absolutely a collectible piece!!

I'd mention to dear FIL that if he ever wants to part with it you would certainly love to have it. If he was in the service in 1962 he must be in his mid-80's at least. You never know, he might just gift it to you or make provisions in his final wishes.

No "rare" but certainly a very nice watch. Is it gold or gold-capped?

Nice beefy lug Seamaster, you might want to swap out the twist-o-flex bracelet for a nice strap or an Omega Beads of Rice bracelet as those things can scratch up the watch a bit and are an old aftermarket choice that were not that great.

Super nice. I would guess it is a ref. 2848 roughly around 1956ish. I have a gold capped version with a similar two-toned dial.

2846 I reckon, the 2848 is the sub second version.

If it is the solid 18K gold version above it is pretty valuable. There is a lot of gold in the solid fat lug cases, over 22g in fact. Whatever, it looks great.

My guess would be a late 2577 or 2767. Slightly beefier than the 2846s. A pic from of the back would be enough to find out.

Definitely a 50s watch. Definitely rather nice.

Congrats!

I will tell my Father in Law. Thanks.

Not sure how I would determine that... short of bringing into an Omega shop?

Turn it over and look at the color of the backs of the lugs. Gold or stainless?

Show us the case back and we’ll be able to tell you a bit more.

Don’t expect personnel in an Omega boutique to be knowledgeable about vintage watches.

Will need to take a look the next time I see him. Thanks!
