The thesis is that a flood of inferior, fake English pocket watches in the late 18th century destroyed the high end British watchmaking industry. While these fakes said London on their main plates, they were cheaply made and, internally, looked nothing like the English watches they claimed to be.
The presenter is the first person to be awarded a doctorate in horology in the UK, and this is her doctoral thesis. She’s done a detailed analysis and established that these fakes, which look like Dutch manufacture, are actually the early foundations of Swiss watchmaking, sponsored by traveling Dutch merchants to undercut the English market in pocket watches.
