I am pretty sure this is a fake Seamaster 300, at the very least the bezel is completely off. It just sold for $3100 (i am not the buyer and i was not interested in buying it considering the doubts I had). The problems i see are as follows:

  • Case shape looks off
  • Bezel insert seems to be a mix of different years
  • bezel ring teeth are way too pronounced
  • dial does not have the telltale dots at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock markers
-Crown is completely wrong

It looks like there is the authentication from Ebay on this watch, I wonder if they will flag it

The first thing I always look at the dial of a seamaster 300 is the 6 and 9. This one, has a typical over-serif'd font. I remember the printing on my seamaster 300 is super flat, looks like the ink infiltrates into the dial. But this one, the printing looks too raised. Looked at other parts, all suspicious. Bezel is fake, case back should also be fake, the font inside the caseback does not look good to me. Let alone the incorrect crown and hands...

I wonder for a long time, how does the fake/imitating business work? Are there like big factories spitting out these things in thousands or is it some lonely printer in a shed somewhere in rural India?

It is fake, but absence of the dots in the luminous are not a sign.

The Original seconds hand should be white. The 6 and 9 should be closed i think. Its really sad to see that such fakes sell for that money.

The 6 and 9 should be open. It’s the older fakes that had closed 6’s and 9’s.

Doubtful. AFAIK eBay "authenticators" (Stoll & Co.) mostly open the watch and verify the movement. I'm not sure they even have the specific knowledge to identify faked vintage watches, though I'd be happy to be proved wrong on this.

I agree based on my experience in buying/selling several 300's.

Not sure how far their knowledge goes, but they have declined to authenticate a few watches I bought. It all seems hit or miss.

They declined a Mitsukoshi Mod because it was “customized” which isn't untrue, but the watch came with all the original/swapped parts. Oddly enough, they didn’t send the watch back to the owner…they simply forwarded it to me without a card.

They also declined to authenticate a 145.012-67 because the hands were repainted (and reasonably well). They called me to see if I was okay with it before sending the watch. I already knew from the item description and didn’t care. They also sent this one without a card.

I have a 165.024 sm300 coming with what I suspect is a refinished dial and poorly relumed hands. Curious to see what they do.

Please keep us updated on what they do for this watches authentication. Thank You . 🙏🏻
