I think I need to be clear on one very important thing.
I had a great chat today with a fellow member from on here about prototypes and extracts etc and I thought I needed to make something clear.
Under no circumstances am I throwing Omega or any member of the Heritage department nor the extract service under a bus. I think we all know how much of a service they offer us, as collectors and I can tell you that without the hard work and dedication from the guys at Omega, we wouldn't know a little part of history of not just a Speedy, but other Omega's that we apply for. We also know that the early days, the world of extracts was new, but now 10 years on, it's a fundamental part of history for some of these watches we own also known as provenance and it's changed massively for the better.
Our goal as collectors is to save a possibly less experienced collector or even a seasoned one making a very expensive mistake in buying something that is being listed as a prototype etc when there is a high chance it's not. If they simply don't see this thread and 10 years later it comes back around for sale and it’s all being debunked as (possibly) fake, it's essentially worthless or worth parts value at most.
What I love about things like this is that us, as collectors & enthusiasts actually teach Omega a few things here and there and vice versa because ultimately the collaboration is key across the board. From the collaboration one thing comes from it, that’s a better understanding of these watches and what DOES legitimately exist, and it stops the main auction house's selling nothing short of crap at over inflated prices.
We all remember the shit show with a certain grey/blue dial that has papers that pre-dated the actual production of the watch, then the second to last owner was threatened with legal action if he kept posting anything more about it - Stuff like this cannot happen, nor can we allow it to happen. We have laws to abide by, the auction houses are not excluded from this. Hopefully they will realise that (possibly) ripping someone off is simply not acceptable and leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth and slanders their name.
Lastly, I want to personally thank Omega, their Heritage department, Raynald and whoever else is involved with the extract side, without you all, it simply wouldn't bolster our watch values. As collectors we are always on hand for you to learn from, and you are always on hand for us to learn from - so Thank You, not just from me, but the wider Omega community.
