That guy is practically begging to be worn on a nato.

Here is some things from Hodinke
. I have an explorer 2, and I love everything about it, drilled lugs, 40mm, tritium dial.

I tried on the current model a couple of times at the AD with the option to buy. I couldn't pull the trigger on either occasion as I find the current proportions are a bit off and it wear much larger than 39mm would suggest. This might be better on a strap or nato. For reference I have a 7.5" wrist and comfortably wear a 116710.

About a year after everyone kindly gave their opinions, I've come across this, 14270 Swiss only from a dealer I've previously bought a pocket watch from (and who also gave me a lot time trying to find somewhere in London to get a different family heirloom pocket watch serviced). I'm getting some more photos sent to me tomorrow. This might be the one.

A Rolex Explorer is on my list, but I wonder, given second hand prices, whether I might not just stick my name on a list for a new one, because I don't perceive that it has the same waiting time as a Submariner or Daytona. I was wondering what people's views were on the various references from 14270 onwards? And what people's experience of the wait time has been?

I've got a 14270 and love it. Fabulous understated watch. Not all show and look at me like a daytona. Its way classier for someone who doesnt need to show its a Rolex.

I love mine so much I'm selling it lol. But I still love it, just need the money for something else. Ive seen plenty of 39mm Exp 1's below list used so they dont hold their money. I'd buy a used one thats taken the hit in devaluation already.

I agree with all that completely. I like the Daytona, but not what goes with it. I hope the something else you're selling yours for is something equally special!

Hi Stripey. I dont know if I am, I'm still questioning the potential sale of the exp. If it sells I think I'll regret it. My gut feeling is it won't sell, thats what I'm telling myself. I'm looking for a Tudor Marine Nationale Snowflake. And I like the Benrus Type 1 military watch. Neither as stylish as an Explorer.....

Depending on much you value the triangle design at 12 o' clock, and the non-lume white gold 3-6-9 of the 36mm explorer dial, another option is to modify a current generation OP 36. Make your own type of explorer 😀

Here's how my OP 36 looks with 114270 hand set installed. I highly rate the current gen OP's bracelet and clasp. You'd lose the lume triangle at 12, but gain lume at the 3, 6, and 9 markers and a newer 3130 movement. Plus an enchanting sunburst dial.

But also much fatter lugs than a 14270. Also subjective, is whether you'd like to see a yellow patina develop over time, as only a tritium 14270 pre-dating the 'Swiss-only' era can offer that. Although for those pre-Luminova 14270 pieces, the yellow patina of the hour markers and hands will not match the white painted inlays of the 3, 6, 9, hour indices.

So several pros & cons to weigh in on, if you're open to this option of taking the path less traveled.

Modding the OP like you have has been in my mind as the perfect idea for a long time! I’m so glad I’ve seen one in the wild now.

That, to me, is a perfect combo!

But you will be the coolest guy in the room with a sterile Benrus T1

Tritium patina doesn't do it for me. I value the ability of the watch to still be seen in the dark much more highly, so where there was a Luminova option over a tritium option on the same watch, I prefer the Luminova. What you've done with OP looks lovely (and I don't often say that about modified watches).

Had a very cordial discussion with the dealer about this watch, but sadly we couldn't agree on a price. So the search goes on!
