This subject is something that I was thinking about for some time after learning that Eterna brand is/was owned by HK/CN capital. Interesting read about ownership structure of Eterna.

Unfortunately, that article is behind a paywall - can you summarize? I used to analyze and occasionally troubleshoot companies, but fathoming Swiss subsidiaries of China corporations was probably one of the toughest gigs even for an expert.

This one just arrived today. Thought I’d share...

Hate to be bearer of possibly bad news.
I think that the dial may be re-finished.
Centenaire, Birks(heavy serif distinct font), and Chronometer, don't look typical of
Eterna dials.

Sadly, I think you're right, and it doesn't appear to say "Swiss" either - but it's still one most funky watch! 👍
Love yours btw Pitpro - beaut.

Not mine, just googled for it. I have an Birks Eterna
and the fonts just didn't look right so I went googling.
Sorry. 🙁

Summary
  • Citychamp Watch & Jewellery Group Ltd. is the owner of Swiss Corum and Eterna brands.
  • There has been a lot of chaos surrounding the company's Swiss brands.
  • Eterna "accidentally" went into bankruptcy twice during in less than twelve month.
  • There are also some issues with Citychamps leadership and structure.
I assume that Citychamp Watch & Jewellery Group Ltd. (CEBTF) -which was formerly known as China Haidian- is not exactly a well known company (at the time of writing it had eleven followers on Seeking Alpha for instance). Its Swiss subsidiaries, Eterna and Corum might be more familiar, at least among people who have an interest in fine watches. The situation at those two subsidiaries is exactly why I am writing this article. For the sake of better readability I will hereafter refer to the company as plainly "Citychamp".
This is available still before the paywall.

Keen to know, if they went through another bankruptcy recently or changed ownership. I would not say that the demand for their products in 2020 was good and it will not look so pretty going into 2021 already missing the smartwatch boat and pretending that they are not a worthy competition. They have a history of ignoring the competition as industry and most probably it will end like during the quartz revolution.

EDIT: BTW you guys are one of the factors impacting their industry - pre-owned watches market 😉

Thanks muchly for that Deloites link! Its nice to feel a little vindicated in ones decisions to collect pre-owned vintage watches.

I imagine its pretty hard to convince significant others who arn't interested in vintage watches that there is an end game other than the joy of owning and collecting these fine time pieces that can be very very financially rewarding given the paucity of good performing investments that you can afford in a Covid 19 and post economy, its difficult wearing that gold bar or share certificate in public!

Very nice, but it's not a "matic", which is the theme of this thread!

True that. It however didn't seem feasable to me to compartmentalize Eterna and Eterna-Matic in separate topics.

I threw together a quick family photo. From left to right, 1947 Eterna Automatic, 1968 Eternamatic 1000, 1967 Eterna Kontiki 20, and a 2010 Eterna Super Kontiki 1973.

Eterna is definitely worthy of more than one thread. -Matic and Kon-Tiki alone each deserve their own.
And so does yours! (Which is a beauty, btw)
