500 euros to service an hand winding watch, time only? Where do you live, Beverly Hills?

In terms of cost of living Beverly Hills, or at least LA as a whole, doesn't come close to where I live. To be fair, 500 euros was for a complete overhaul, which I assume is more than just a regular service.

For most of us, overhaul and service are synonymous.

If you find yourself in this situation in the future, try and ask the seller to set the time and check it in 24-hours and tell you how much it's off by. If it's minimal you should be fine to at least wear it for a bit straight away without needing a service, and often you can use Polywatch to clean a crystal up well enough for every day use. If the watch stops, or is several minutes slow, then you know the movement at least needs serviced. In any case I would not expect a vintage watch to be sealed against water and even heavy hand washing can cause some ingress, usually noticed as a foggy crystal.
I'd still offer him the original price and see what he says, he may have others who claim interest but it's the person who is willing to put the money down that gets the goods. Even at a cheap price, lots of people are all talk.

Consider sending it to another country - I think you'd get a good service for around half of that, including most parts, in the UK.
Where do you recommend for servicing in London?

There’s a guy in Hatton Garden I use for simple services but I would send this to Christian at https://watchguy.co.uk/ for a quote. He’s not in London. Also I’m sure fellow OF member Chris Nichols would quote you for this job. Here is his website https://cjnwatch.co.uk/wp/about/. I’ve not asked Chris to service a watch for me but I believe he is excellent.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will certainly explore them for my vintage automatic.

Some very good watchmakers in the UK for much cheaper than has been suggested. I'd definitely recommend watchguy, but it might be worth having a look at Michael Swift in Scotland, who's quite well known around the forums for his old-school pricing (but he may be busy; be prepared to wait). https://www.michaelswift.co.uk/services. I've also just had a watch serviced by Rich Askham from http://thewatchspotblog.com/. I can't recommend him highly enough - should cost no more than £180 there.

That sounds good. I have never posted a watch before. How do you guys wrap and package it to send for service ?
