After cleaning a movement in the cleaning machine, I opened it up to find this just sitting inside the machine:

It's the cork seal that is on top of the jars when they are not in use:

Held in by 3 screws:

Those go into a tapped plate:

Now removed:

Need new cork - found these 4 mm thick coaster bases:

Little larger and thicker, but they should work:

Drilled out a few:

Hole in the middle added:

Then spent about 30 minutes being a contortionist to get it back together:

Works great. The back one is going to be a real bitch to get done when the time comes. Had the machine for close to 20 years and not had to do anything to it yet, so this wasn't so bad...and by far the cheapest repair I've ever had to do on one of the major pieces of equipment.

I had to do something similar some time ago. I had an old English watch cleaning machine and the jar gaskets had disintegrated.
Found some cork/rubber composite sheet and cut some new gaskets. Worked really well and I think I still have a sheet of it in the garage.

I had similar issues when I bought my Elma second hand (same model by the look of it @Archer ) and I made my life much easier by taking off the sides and back from the machine before mucking about. I still have one of the sides off actually, as now and again a wobble will make one of the cork lids jam a bit and stop the machine running to the next cycle. Hasn't happened for a while though so should probably put it back on for safety's sake!

My machine is actually inside a cabinet, so I was trying to do the job without having to remove it from the cabinet.

But yes it would have been much easier to replace with the panels removed, and next time I'll probably have to do that. The left side cork was the easiest givin I'm right handed, so the right side one would be much more difficult trying to replace that, and the back one is completely a no go without removing the panels.
