eBay seller watch question responses - The good, the bad and the ?!?!?!?

I had a rather unusual response to a pretty general question that I asked to an eBay seller and it dawned on me this might be a fun topic of discussion. The correspondence doesn't necessarily have to be from eBay, but that is just where mine occurred so hence the title.

As I imagine many of us have had distinctive, maybe somewhat strange, exchanges with sellers on online platforms I thought that it could be a source of a few chuckles. So post your good, the "oof, rough" and just those what the "hell just happened." Screenshots if you've got em'! And for a bit of anonymity, because who knows they may be here on OF, let's crop out the seller's username unless you've really have a "buyer beware" situation.

Here's my contribution:
Interested in a Speedmaster Mark II and I thought I'd ask for a daylight photo of the dial to get a better understanding of the condition.

Didn't hear back for a few days, so I followed up.

Sheesh, that escalated quickly! Didn't mean to get anyone fired, was just hoping for a daylight photo. LOL

Well-known seller that I've purchased several high value watches from had a horribly re-dialed vintage DateJust up for auction. I figured it had slipped through the cracks and I'd just let him know. Hilarious response, hopefully from a junior employee. Good thing the redialers haven't figured out this trick. 🙄

HAHAHA!!! Yeah, if I was trying to forge a dial, I'd leave out one of the most conspicuous design elements.

I made an offer on a bezel and the seller accepted my offer. In my thanking him for accepting my offer I said “I hope it fits”. This is what ensued:

Well, the bezel didn’t fit. I just ate this one,

Do you have that guy's contact info, he sounds like a good match for my ex sister-in-law.

Holy hell, this thread escalated quickly. The insanity of writing all of that down in a response.

I deduce from his message he doesn't accept returns 😀

It also appears his return policy has been negatively compared to Sears Department Store one to many times 😁

I can contribute with a positive example. Since all was in German, I just provide a brief summary of the messages.

A professional seller had listed an English watch for a rediculous starting price being less than 1/10 of a realistic market value, the watch having a carousel movement and being something really special (an identical one but slightly different serial number having received three Kew A ratings!). I contacted him and provided information about the watch and past auction results in well established auction houses. He responded that his listing presumably was rather diletantic and he even had not yet figured out how to open the watch for movement photos. But he would nevertheless let the auction continue. He then added movement photos and the information I had provided to the listing. And the auction finally ended at a price that was not too far from other past results (funny side aspect, I suspected who the winner was, and it turned out that I was right after asking him). As a thank you the seller promised me lifetime free coffee in his shop (located in the same city where I live) 😁.

You’ve probably come out ahead - unless the coffee is awful 😉

That guy’s a liar. I just checked, and Sears doesn’t have them in stock.

I wonder if that transaction would have gone that way if it had been in person. Bad enough that there is a language and culture barrier. The internet just makes people more likely to overreact.

It's a good thing the seller was "in the mood of holidays" as he put it. I can't imagine his regular mood.

I can see why he initially was on the offense with the "Hope it fits" but then his ego got a little crazy. Don't think the language barrier was a factor in this case. I will say though reading someone else go through a shitty buyer experience is wayyy better than living it. Somehow it is humorous as opposed to stressful lol.

-P.S. fu##er my tone is my business, happy holidays degenerate Sears shopper!::rimshot::

Please tell me you left the feedback: "Seller is rude. Bezel doesn't fit."
