Hey members,

Been a while between posts, but just wanted opinions on this 2998 posted on ebay. I had a look don't think a post has been made yet.

Dial I think is replacement/service as no small hashes on minute register.

Can't comment on hands, but lollipop looks off?

And lastly what are your thoughts on the bezel, it is either the best base1000 I have seen or is later.

Cheers!

The second picture is small but on the hands look short (especially the minute hand). Agree dial is wrong for a 2998-2. I am not familiar enough with a base 1000 bezel to comment on it.

Dial and hands are off. Bezel looks like it came straight off the assembly line. The best thing there is maybe the bracelet?

Would not touch this with a 10ft pole. The story being told in the auction description does not match the visuals of the watch, not at all.

There is a well known guy in Australia that makes these repro bezels, although this fonts look more refined.

Lewis watch Co. In Perth. He is a good watch restorer. His bezels have his LWC logo on the back of the insert. This font here looks different.

They look different indeed, I didn’t know they were branded below the insert, although that would be a hard place to check.

In this case just because of the condition I am going to have to go with reproduction, its just circumstantial evidence but the two other scenarios seem unlikely: the owner invested 12k-15k on a new old stock bezel, or was incredibly lucky to find one for cheap.

That's not one of my inserts. Mine are relatively easy to spot as the text is engraved not printed. They cannot be faded chemically either. Also yes, the back has a repeating LWC motif. The main difference being I'm not trying to pass my inserts off as real.....

The insert pictured is definitely a reproduction, you can tell by looking at how it fits the actual steel bezel ring. There is a gap between the insert and the steel on the outer edge. So it has probably been either glued in or fixed with double sided tape.

And apologies for dragging this post up, I haven't been active on here for quite some time....trying to remedy that a bit as time permits.
