Considering a purchase from a reputable vintage watch dealer. No known history but had recently been serviced by a local watchsmith. Serial number dates the movement to 1972. The case, dial and crown all seem to be from the early 70s. Curious if anyone has any thoughts. Thank you in advance.

It’s a modern fake and has been recently polished and artificially aged to look like it has wear.

OP, the market is flooded with fakes and if you don't want to buy from a truly reputable source, you will need to do a lot of studying. In this case, there are a number of visible problems with the watch, but even typing your original post should raise some questions in your mind. The 1972 production date, for example.

I'd suggest reading the key reference websites from beginning to end. You can start here:

There really has been a flood of these lately, with big triangles, if you are the type of buyer who has to ask, you shouldn’t even be considering them such is the prevalence of different fakes.

To be honest I would also tread carefully with some dealers regarding seamaster 300’s (and 120’s). I messaged a UK dealer a few weeks ago to tell them their sm120 was fake. They did pull it from the website but unfortunately I think a good number are being sold as genuine items right now

Appreciate your response. I did go though the reference above before posting. Many variations over the years. Everything seemed close to the time period. The serial dating to 1972 is what gave me the most pause.

Many details about the dial, bezel, and case are wrong. As you study more examples, it will become second nature to recognize them. In the meantime you will have to study every detail laboriously.
