Do people keep their collections out of the sun?

Yes, I don't expose my watches to direct sunlight. Two issues with the sun, UV light and heat. The UV light can damage dials, more so on vintage watches then modern as I believe the materials used today are more durable. Heat, especially if left out on a hot day, or you don't have AC (think San Francisco), can damage the movement possibly and any plastic parts associated with the watch.

I only keep one of my watches in the sun.
It is my Citizen Eco-Drive WR-200.
It loves direct sunshine to power its battery.

I keep it on a window sill in my house overlooking the backyard.
It gets about 6 hours of direct sunshine every day and stays fully charged.

I'm not too worried about potential sun damage because it is not an expensive watch.

The other side effect of all that sunshine is the Superluminova dial glows like crazy in the dark.

These are watches, they should be hidden away in the deepest recesses of Smaug’s castle.

As the guy who drove the van for months-long band tours and who sported the American left-side "trucker's tan," I can attest that UV light gets through a window.

I ain't got me no gazz-eh-bow or ceement pond in my yard but still the sun shine da same!

You know when you go into the art museum and they say "no flash pictures"? Yes, even the flash can create damage.
Easily googlable myth. Flashes are prohibited primarily to avoid annoying everyone around.

My East-North-East facing window probably generates 2-3hrs of direct sunlight on to my glass-topped watch box. At least, i think it's glass, as it's cold to the touch. Thinking about potential bezel and dial fading, my elementary physics isn't so good... how much colour-zapping UV gets through the glass? Nothing worth concerning about? Clearly, you don't get sunburn in a car, so i suspect the vast majority is blocked, but it might be that different parts of the spectrum (that still deteriorate colour) gets through...? Paint on walls gradually fades when exposed to sun, so windows clearly don't block everything.
Does anyone have any thoughts, or better still, experience...? They look lovely illuminated by natural light, but perhaps i'm slowly ruining them.

simply move to UK, no problem with sun there, as they say "summer is the best day of the year"

Been there at different times of July, August, and September, and all have been lovely. I don't mind a few showers. In fact, with the forest fire smoke we've got here right now making us look and smell like downtown Mordor, a few summer showers seem like a good idea.

Out of the sun? Mine are out of sight. In a case buried under boxes in the storage area
