The Blue Marlin was one of a batch caught at the Rowley Shoals, 350 kilometers of the north westerncoast of Western Australia. The Sailfish is only a couple of K off the coast.

Got a few dives in today with my SRP777 at a quarry here in VA! What a watch. I feel like I'm bonding with it more and more every day.

...I have officially become a certified Open Water Diver! ::psy::

Good work, congratulations!

I'm pretty happy with the iPhone/WaterShot combo. The most appealing aspect of this setup is that it fits easily in a pocket in my dry suit. For the iPhone/WaterShot setup, additional lighting can be provided by a bright (500+ lumen), wrist-mounted flashlight; the close-up fish scenes in my video (posted above) were illuminated with a wrist-mounted flashlight.

I used to lug a full DSLR setup underwater, but I've lost the patience to deal with the weight, bulk, and complexity of an underwater housing and lighting system. There are trade-offs of course. I doubt I'll get the kind of shots I got with a DSLR, but I'm more into simplicity now. Here's a shot taken with my DSLR setup, and a link to my underwater photography [and a little bit of astrophotography]:

I've already got all of my essential diving gear squared away, and I wondered if you all had any recommendations as far as basic underwater cameras go (because one can never have enough gear, right?).

All my video was shot on a GoPro Hero4 Black, in the dive case it came in. I gave up on stills, and sold my Sony compact camera, housing and strobe. Fish rarely pose for pics - that and I’m a lousy photographer. Video is much easier, and video at 4K makes pulling out decent stills easy.

Operating the camera is a breeze - one button stops and starts it. So no control overload when you’re supposed be keeping track of your depth, where your buddy is, how much air you’ve got left etc etc... Ooo look, a fishy! 😁

The one other thing you’d probably need is a video light. You can use filters for wide shots, but when you get up close nothing beats a nice wide, bright vid light.

@Jones in LA - Amazing photos! Those dives in the Galapagos look incredible. I'm definitely no photographer so I think the iPhone/Watershot would be a good option for me to start. The 6S version is on sale here for only $40 -- https://www.watershot.com/products/watershot-for-iphone-6-pro-housing -- is this the right product? The price seems almost too good!

@Greatoldone - Sounds like the GoPro is in my future. Once I start diving more I think I may take the plunge. Any recommendations on a video light?

Hmm. Thanks. Thinking I might want to keep my 6S when I buy a new phone and use it for this. Need to investigate lighting though.

Yup, that's the one -- and it's a genuine steal at that price (I paid 3x that much!). If you're going to use an iPhone for multiple dives on the same day, you should be prepared to give your phone a charge boost after the 2nd dive; when the phone is inside the case it is "on" all the time and seems to burn through a battery charge quicker than normal (dry land) use.

Thanks for the tip! Ended up paying $56 after shipping. Still a steal for sure.

Got a few more murky lake dives under my belt with the SRP777. Thanks for the Watershot recommendation @Jones in LA! Works like a charm. 👍

This thread needs a bump! For me it’s been a few weeks since I returned from Cozumel and I’m already itching to go back. It was a fantastic week of diving (first ocean dives!) and I had a lot of fun taking a few different dive watches down with me. Only got a couple underwater photos for now (and of course my mask was fogging horribly that day 👎- I subsequently switched masks); hopefully a few more to come. Who can identify the watch in the first picture?

So who else has been diving this summer?? 🍿

Diving? Had no idea anybody used their diving watches to dive. I was expecting a DRIVING thread, not diving. 😀

Cool to see the Oris Sixty Five being dunked.

That watch appeals to me. Of course I'd never even shower with it if I had it.
