As someone who owns a gen 0 and a Gen 3 ceramic white edition, I think you'll be very disappointed going the TAG Heuer connected route unless you're an Android user in which case you're probably already used to disappointment 馃榿
At least Android phones manufacturers are not slowing down their devices purposely, to boost the sales on the new models)))馃槣 Talking about disappointment...

And the IFixit teardown in pictures - almost reminds me of an Archer PDF 馃槈

https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple Watch Teardown/38659

Don't let "IFixit" works on any of your watches..."a quick twist with a small flathead screwdriver popped the cover off!" Yes indeed, it went sailing across the room by the looks of it!

::facepalm1::

And some of the terminology used clearly indicates no watchmakers were involved in the making of this video...

Note that they didn't put it back together...I'm guessing that watch is dead now...

Yeah, their hand removal technique also left much to be desired. This was posted as an April Fools joke just before the current Apple Watches first came out, if I recall correctly.

Sounds like it was filmed in April and made by fools.

I have always worn an activity tracker since they were launched ( starting with Fitbit zip) and to a much advanced garmin Fenix 3HR. With any kind of activity tracker for e.g with my last one Fitbit Charge 2, I could still wear my watches. But I will probably be a laughing stock if I wear any watch with my Garmin Fenix smartwatch. That doesnt however mean, I will stop buying more mechanical watches OR I will stop upgrading my smartwatches.

Edit - For visualization purpose, pasting a pic of my Fenix on my wrist. There is no way, I can pull off another watch on my other wrist.

Happy owner of a Galaxy S8 and a Vaio Z Flip notebook (Made in Japan) with I7 CPU, 16 GB RAM, Iris 550 graphics and 512GB SSD.馃榾

The way my wife curses with very 馃槨IOS upgrade to her Iphone and IPad馃槨 I prefer to "suffer" with my "disappointing Android/Windows" experience as you put it.馃檮

Am I right in assuming that your almost religious devotion to over hyped Chinese manufactured products means that you will soon be adding one of these to your watch collection some time soon?馃榿
I'm an RHCE, so I got windows out of my life thankfully in 1997, switched to a macbook pro in 2011 or so. If you like slow and unreliable equipment and your underpowered laptop being made in Japan is important to you by all means but as an engineer I need to depend on my equipment, and after having to mail my Vaio SZ to Sony for 3 months before becoming a Mac owner and realising 2-3 day turnarounds on hardware repairs should be the norm, I can't accept that level of poor service any longer.

"keep If someone simply must know immediately what has happened with every ping and buzz their phone makes, then I can see these watches being something worthwhile. I don't fall into that camp...
Al

I agree to this point but There is another side and usage of these smart watches as well. they give very powerful health statistics or workout stats. I felt the real need to upgrade as ky Fitbit was not able to provide me all the stats I was looking for for my marathon preparation.
And this side can never be replaced by anything else.

I find it so funny that you assume that my Windows 10 notebook is slow and under powered based on your "recent" experience with Windows in 1997.

FYI I run VMs with complete PLM software setups and 3D CAD model (Navisworks) design review sessions of ship and offshore platform models containing hundreds of thousands of parts with no issues. I have not had one hitch or since I purchased the notebook in 2016. I also use the touch screen functionality with the Vaio Pen to draw diagrams in live meetings with clients or for my notes. I suppose you also have to take along your trusty Ipad to do that sort of stuff?

My wife's Macbook Pro stopped working for no reason...so reliability issues can happen. This is my third top range Vaio Z (all made in Japan...the made in China models do indeed suck) and none have presented problems.

I would certainly refrain from being pretentious and assume performance characteristics of something I do not use or have no personal day to day record of seeing someone else use.

If you want to worship to the Apple "God" go ahead, mate. I suppose it probably gives you some sort of spiritual comfort.

Could not imagine better device, to track my exercises, plus all the phone calls are going to your wrist while you are in the GYM.
Plus you can mess around with the dials))))

Mate I'm not basing it on 1997, I have a company issued Windows 10 Dell with much better specs than that and it serves as a monitor stand, just no point using it. Understanding specifications is not pretentious, its basic math my friend, a mere matter of comparing Apple's to Apple's if it were 馃榾

Just as a reminder though, with all the church of apple waffle you go on with, I didn't come on a watch forum and make a thread just to bad mouth other people's choices, that's what you did and the insecurity really is dripping off of all of this.

I would rather read a Rolex v Omega thread than this. And I hate Rolex v Omega threads...

If it works for you, great. Just realize that not everyone sees the value in tracking every aspect of their lives or workouts.

Oh dear. You don't get it do you?

"Under powered" is completely relative to the use case you have. For me the Vaio Z works great and I have no performance issues. I don't know what your use case requirements are and for me the Vaio Z with its spec quick boot time, touch screen, digital pen and being light and portable gives me the "performance" I want and need. My "apples" are indeed different from your "apples".

Ref your comment about the thread: when I started the thread it was completely focused on the debate of how much the smartwatch is a significant threat to the luxury mechanical watch market. The Apple Watch as market leader was used as reference...it was not meant to be a a dig at the AW or smartwatch owners.

Everything was going fine in the thread...with good discussion. Today I discussed how I felt that in the long term the health features in the AW might be replaced by a lower cost wearable platform..and then I mentioned that I too was thinking of making my first smartwatch purchase with the Tag-Heuer Connected 41mm, They you came out of the blue taking a dig at my choice and for some reason at Android??

Surely a bit hypocritical on your part accusing me of being insecure and "bad mouthing other people's choices".

Hopefully this will clear things up once and for all:
1. I think Apple deserves admiration for product innovation: Ipod, Iphone/Ipad, Apple Watch. I do not necessarily think it makes the best products in all categories right now, nor do I think its business model is as ethical as I think it should be...but no one can deny that they have led device innovation for decades.
2. This will come as a shock to you, but I honestly think as a pure smartwatch the Apple Watch Gen 3 is the best smartwatch on the market today and I truly admire how Apple managed to create the product, roll it out and get the level of user adoption they have. Do I like the product myself? No. Do I understand why other people do? Yes.
3. So why do I prefer the Tag-Heuer Connected 41mm? Because I think Biver is the new Steve Jobs?LOL
No, because I believe I will develop an emotional connection with the watch, for the reasons stated in my post. Right now I would not buy a smartwatch just for the smartwatch utility features (if that were the case the AW would be the best option)...I will be buying the Tag-Heuer using the same mix of rational / irrational / emotional decision process I believe many of us go through for any mechanical watch purchase. Do I need a US$1200,00 smartwatch? No, nor do I need luxury mechanical luxury watch.

I agree with Al that we did not need to descend to a Rolex vs Omega type discussion. So Ash if you really think Apple is wonderful and superior on all fronts: Windows, Android, Tablets, SmartWatches etc. you have every right to have that opinion. I suggest you just calm down a bit and perhaps use less aggressive wording before assuming you really know what I think about a given subject.

Once again mate, read your own OP and thread title lol

I did...and nope still don't see the issue...perhaps I had assumed that a bit of humor would have come across in the title??

This was the point I was trying to make...if Samsung Gear was the market leader this would have been my OP:
Of course a bit of an exaggeration saying the Samsung Gear is dead, but the recent folding of Pebble and sales drop of the Samsung Gear do show that the imminent collapse of the mechanical watch industry is not going to be motivated by the smartwatch, as some hysterical analysts predicted initially, at least with this current iteration of the smartwatch.

I think you are more passionate about Apple than I originally thought. LOL I just edited the title to win a dearly sought after and cherished like from yours truly.馃榾

Won't be holding my breath...
