My pops was similar. He headed up a major US foundry moving operations to Asia. They were still using technology we were using in the 1800’s so it was a big job. Spent at least half the year traveling if not more. He made it to the cover of metallurgy magazine when he was picked to study the metals after 9-11.
Was this for the NIST study, or did he do that for a private lab? Either way that speaks volumes about your dad's capabilities and experience. There was a lot more to it than would appear to the general public.

I fully intend on receiving a retirement watch; fortunately my employer is a watch buff and wears a small variety of nice watches.
Granted, I am self employed, but still.
Also fwiw I have another 20 yrs until I retire and plan on several pre retirement watches as well.😉

But I do sympathize with the dearth of companies that distribute retirement watches today.

No I, but I inherited one.
I inherited one through my wife; this was presented to her Grandfather upon his retirement from a locomotive factory in Zurich in the 1950s.
A Swiss watch for a Swiss' retirement...
It went in for a full service a few years back and it continues to tick along beautifully

I fully plan on getting myself one. Hopefully by then I’ll have my grail. If not, it’ll be a reason to get it.

Not only will I not get a watch, I’m seriously beginning to doubt I’ll ever get to retire. 👎🙁

I guess if you work for a Micky Mouse outfit you will get a Micky Mouse watch, I need to get a job at Rolex!

But seriously if you work at Disney what do you get.

Today is my last day in the offshore oil and gas business after 37 years and 6 years on this asset. The small offshore team presented this to me today, I am absolutely blown away by their thoughtfulness. It may not be everyone's ideal watch but I'll wear it with pride.😀

That's an awesome watch! It's not a cheap, throwaway gift at all! We should all be so lucky!

That’s definitely better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick!

Self employed all my days so no retirement gift but no complaints as I have been fortunate to be able to afford a few pieces along the way

I worked for a Rolex dealer for a few months short of 25 years. Came the day I had turned 50, the store lost money for the first time, the lease was up, and my 50th birthday, and you hadda know what was coming! When the store was closed, I was offered continued employment for a 40% pay reduction, or a salary for one year if I chose to resign. I wasn’t offered a Rolex watch, but even if I had, I’d have taken the salary for one year. It was worth a lot more for me. But I still left their employ with a Rolex won in a Rolex sales contest in 1971. 😀 This Air-King came with a steel bezel. I lucked into a NOS genuine Rolex 14-karat bezel decades ago. Don’t remember when. It was in my stash in its original Rolex envelope with a $595.00 price on it. In 2021 (my 50th year of ownership), I put the bezel on the Air-King.
.
I just purchased the Omega Seamaster 14k gold Watch That was Gift to the VP of NBC for 22 years of service is dated 1944 to 1966 with his name on it Thomas C Mcray. I feel like it is my retirement watch for living old enough to collect Social security !!!!!!

That sounds so cool. Post photos when you get it. I really like engraved watches. They can tell a story.

My father towards the end became “the Asian guy” helping metal companies, valves, manhole covers you name it to be manufactured in Asia. He wasn’t happy seeing the industry he loved disappear from the US but he loved travel and was all over the orient. He seemed to get a fair number of quartz bulova and you would think he got a Rolex. Only one survived all the moves I have it means a lot to me. I’m packing things up right now can’t dig for that watch box but the chances of me getting one are probably in he realms of winning lotto
