Did I miss something? Market prices...

Interesting thread. I've bought more that I thought I would this year. The prices for all our favorite brands are going up and my watch fun fund is increasingly hard to justify. The more exposure to vintage it seems the more buyers appear. The big brands are releasing homage pieces and so are independents and these kick starters. There is a reason for that. Vintage is now in style. Tapping the brakes and thinking thinking thinking about culling. Seiko, Bulova, Timex anyone?

I know what you mean. Sometimes I take a step back and think why? I think the way the market is going, the temptation to spend a lot of money on a piece before prices get even more crazy is just so great. Right now I'm trying to resist that, and save and enjoy what I have before I burn myself out too quickly (and maybe spend some money on something that isn't watches... 😲).

Those Japanese collectors' watches are insane. You should see others' page! Particularly @shinakym and @tchrono. Best chrono collection in IG imo

I think we need an existential toboggan ride to resolve the matter. 😁

Supply v Demand....
Dealers jump in, SPLASHING the pool...
Let's not get started on auction houses...

But ... every now and then I get surprised. Like this recent auction...

See estimate? See sold??

Just bought this one from a non IG collector, you see I am not wiser for it is gold, only 37,5 mm and it didn't cost me 4k €.
Nice watch....you know how to find them! It's got something Longinesinessy about it 😀....I think it would look very nice on my wrist!

Just for the record, how can a watch be "Crazy" or "Insane"? Is that when the watch thinks it is a clock or something?

@omegastar maybe it's some kind of special IG coded language that we don't understand yet??

Has anyone here successfully bought a watch off of Instagram? Any good tips for doing so? Do you buy only from established watch dealers or collectors that you know?

I've inquired many times based on that single "for sale" IG dial photo, but asking prices are always seem way too high, and there are never any of the additional photos available (of movement, caseback etc etc). Using IG to DM sellers is an cumbersome communication method. And yet these watches seem to sell quite quickly. It makes buying those out-of-focus-photo watches off eBay seem like a much more reasonable gamble...

Most of the watches I posted were fro. IG and never succeed in finding something at even a relatively affordable price... So i must assume that something happen on IG that I don't really understand...

I did and in fact, 3 of my watches are from Instagram. All of them are from various dealers and collectors sometimes selling their watches. It's true that sometimes you have to take a gamble by saying "I'll take it" before the seller is able to provide additional pictures (which I did when I bought my latest watch). It's also true that most of the asking prices are way too pricy but to be honest, the prices on Instagram seem to carry hefty premiums when compared to, for example, OF. I think it's due to the sheer amount of people looking for vintage watches for sale there.

Any tips? I think it's down to luck being the first to enquire for reasonably priced pieces 🙄

I've had a lot of enquires over things I've posted up as for sale on Instagram... nearly all from Italian dealers, who were very keen to tell me that what I had for sale was too expensive... and then when I looked on their sites, they had similar pieces for 2-3 times what I was asking.

I bought a few watches of IG. Mostly from dealers I know and trust. I was lucky to get a few "make a quick sale (of the books)" watches for good prices. They always provided plenty of additional pictures and were willing to answer any questions before committing. But things move fast with other buyers waiting. So, no long deliberating.....

I sold my Technos, Seiko diver, Yema Yachtingraf, and have had inquiries to buy all of my watches on IG.

Haven't bought anything on there.

Did you buy based on that one IG photo? Were the watches as you expected? Did you have any concerns about the transaction?

If the phrase "Trust the Seller" is a Rule that many of us use when buying watches, it would seem that Rule takes on even greater importance when buying on Instagram.

I got more and good pictures on request. Again I bought from dealers I have dealt before, leading to mutual trust.

You have to know also that many OF members have an IG account 😉 sometimes you can be lucky and found someone you already know here with another name 😉

All of my transactions were quite satisfactory. Very smooth transaction even.

I believe all of the watch accounts that I follow can be trusted so that's that 😁
