Did I miss a great deal?

Thank you all for taking your time and answering my question! ;D

@OmegaP99 If it turned out to be a fake one then I wouldn't mourn much over the lost money. Sure, it would be an expensive lesson to learn but nothing compared to what I have invested in Bitcoin DURING ITS PEAK in 2017/18. Still waiting for Bitcoin to reach ATH 😁

I have messaged the seller and offered him $600 if he sells it to me. I have even thought about telling him the true story about what his watch is actually worth... but I couldn't. It's bad for the seller I guess but a win for the bidder that was quicker on making his mind up and buying it. Don't want to spoil his great deal he has made.

@pdxleaf Thanks for the kind words and this great quote you got there! Honestly, I am not a real fan of that particular dial. I prefer the Constellations with arrow hour markers. I can understand the envy that could have arisen with such a click-bait-y title but honestly, since I am not a fan of this configuration, I would have flipped the watch here with a great percentage off to give back to this great community.

There are actually some cheap deals that I am following currently (mainly vintage Patek and Omega boxes) that still need to end. Since no one is shipping abroad and since ebay sellers are literally demanding dream prices, I would like to have them offered here for cheap on this forum for other people to enjoy them as well.

@JwRosenthal Congrats on the purchase 😁 The problem is that I haven't really been following these kind of Constellations. I was mainly interested in the C-shaped ones. I could only apply the basic knowledge (does hand and dial match, has it been refinished, how about the polish, the case back, the crown, the text). It was rather a rough estimate than rocket science with comparing reference number etc. etc.

There is no PayPal protection on this site. You usually pay upfront via eBanking or you go and get it in person. Whenever I was buying something expensive, I would always go and pick it up. It's really great when you only have to roughly drive 2h in any direction to reach the end of the borders 😁

It might sound unheard of but in my 7 years on this site, I have never encountered a scammer. It's pretty rare. A reason for that might be that you can only register if you have a domestic address (they auction site sends a verification code via post office that you need to input on their website).

Still thank you all for your great replies 😁

Have you done a reverse image search? Those are very high quality watch nerd type pics for a “clueless” seller. If there is no buyer protection I would lean towards scam.

The price is good for what it is, but in the big picture I wouldn't be interested in having that watch in my collection because of the case. If I bought it, it would just be to sell. So it's just money ... you missed out on a profit of a few hundred dollars in a flip. It's not like you missed out on an amazing watch.

Yes, I have done a reverse search. Unfortunately, it didn't yield any useful results. It just showed other generic round (imagine that 😁 ) watches. Thanks Google!

I am not sure if you have read my previous posts but this seller was selling other expensive stuff (a used Kennwood kitchen cooker and a used Dyson vacuum cleaner) for relatively cheap money. The cooker is already gone. Let me know if you're interested in the Dyson cleaner ;D

He also seemed to have a pretty dark brown wooden floor (nothing extravagant but still implying that the guy is well off).

Thinking about this in retrospect, I assume that the guy was not clueless but he simply didn't care about the money. What you need to know about my home country is that there are a lot of people who are earning a lower end 5 figure monthly salary. They simply don't care. The people earning more care even less. AND even normal folks with middle class salaries have often accepted my 20-30% (sometimes even more, but these were all listings of maybe < $400) offers.

I had multiple instances where I got literally new electronics (just unpacked, and the people selling them being unhappy about the size, color or whatever arbitrary reason) for 50% off. When I went there to pick it up all of them lived in a nice place (understatement).

Or the very kind brother I have who recently bought me the $800 Apple watch just because he heard me talk about the cool EKG feature we analyzed in our med classes and me actually wanting the watch but never ever being able to justify that much money on a piece of decaying smartwatch. I neither had birthday nor did we celebrate anything. He offered it to me out of the blue without me ever asking him/anyone to do so. Just because he's well-off (and loving) and is in a position to not care much about that amount of money.

One reason why you can find great deals here is because everything is locked up and only accessible to the Swiss. If these sites were to open up for foreign bidders, the prices on any other not-so-known things would shoot up and even out with ebay prices. There is just not enough demand for certain things. For instance, If you are looking for a Microsoft laptop, you can find one pretty easily for couple hundreds of dollars off of retail. That's because that kind of product is not so much sought after here. But on the other hand, if you were to sell an Apple product, you would reach sale prices as anywhere else on this world. A lot of demand because it's known and not a niche product.

So it isn't really unheard of to get good deals here. I suspect that this deal was a combination of A) the guy not caring, not wanting to go through hassles with researching while offering the watch at a price that seemed okay for him and B) being clueless. If he knew it was 18k as we assume it, he would have put up a higher price tag.

I don't want to flex on anything but just wanted to share the sentiment here. All of this made me think hard and I just realized how privileged I am to live here and have such a great family and surroundings without ever needing to work for all of this. Not sure how I have deserved this.

Have a nice day!

That's how I see it as well. Nothing I would wear (not my cup of tea), just the monetary value being lost here (if any). Let's hope for a scam ::psy::::psy::😀😀

I think there are people who love the hunt, love getting the deal and love the flip. They are prepared to take risks and possibly lose money on the deal- but it’s all part of the hobby for them.
There are also some who just want to collect what they would wear and don’t care about profit, they are after specific models or makers and it must tick all the boxes or it’s not worth the effort-neither is right or wrong.
I fit into the later category, I see watches listed for great prices sometimes, but have to exercise discipline knowing that I don’t have the desire to own that particular watch, and the effort it would take to flip it would go counter to my enjoyment of the hobby- so I just move on. That said, if I saw a Presidential with a BIN of $500, you bet your ass I would buy that thing and flip it the next day...we all have our price. 😎

Even if it were legit and a great deal - you can’t regret being cautious.
It’s only a watch, and it’s only money.

This would be like asking Jay Leno if he collects cars. 😵‍💫

I guess I have to explain myself, since it was not obvious..........................I was just being silly.

Rather than commend @Syrte on her level headed, balanced, and sane approach to watch collecting, I was merely contrasting the obsessive and Brofessional approach many of us sometimes bring to this hobby.

Carry on good sirs and ladies.............

Lost in the monotone world of net chat- sarcasm and humor rarely translate well. I figured your post must have been tongue in cheek for someone who has been here for so long (hence my squishy face). Testosterone usually is reserved for WUS and blatant snobbery for TRF so you were having a laugh with the kind and gentle approach.

Well, if it helps to ease the pain, I think there is something very wrong with the watch.
The dial has the fat-onyx inserts of a gold de-luxe dial but I’ve never seen a two-tone, dome dial, masquerading as a pie-pan, de-luxe dial.
The hands are the wrong shape, the hour hand should terminate in a sharp point.
The medallion should have a textured background and shouldn’t be so prominent.
The case is heavily polished but the lugs show no evidence of the side facets that you expect on a solid gold case.

it’s possible that it could be a locally made case (I.e. not Swiss) and so not follow the normal conventions but it does pose a lot of questions IMHO.

For reference - Swiss gold cased dogleg:

I really hope you didn't offer the seller more money! Not a gentlemanly thing to do and I would hope no serious OF member would act in this way

I have! One guy was trying to sell what he called a "Mühle Glashütte" pocket watch from the 1920s (which is impossible, as MG only started making watches in the 90s). It was quite clear that he had stripped the movement out of a Teutonia pocket watch (sold the gold) and put it in a different case.

Another was a shop that sells used furniture etc selling a Gibson guitar with a neck that was so twisted that it is impossible to play (I went to see this guitar). I told the website and they said they could not doing anything about it. Someone ended up buying it. Poor sod..

It looks like a dial from a 168.004, doesn't it? Like this one:
