Did I do permanent damage?

While setting the time today, I heard this clear metal on metal grinding sound.

Realizing something is off, I pushed the crown all the way back and out again.
I think what happened was that, I did not lock into crown position 3 while I was trying to set the time. I was probably hovering somewhere between position 2 and 3 (date -> time setting).

I checked for damage after. The hands seem to move fine. The date change mechanism seems to work fine as well.

How big a mess up was this? What's the risk of my little maneuver shearing something important?

This was on an 8800 calibre.

Thanks!

The grinding noise did not persist though.
After I pulled out the crown fully to position 3, it was OK. Position 1 and 2 also seemed normal.

My concern was more regarding the potential damage I did when turning the crown between position 2 and 3. There was a very unpleasant grinding sound.
Could any of the gears get sheared?

I would leave it a couple of days - don’t wind it and keep it on the wrist. Assuming it keeps time and date changes ok, I suspect no harm will have been done.

I'd pull the crown to stop the movement and take it in
