Decisions decisions

Hi all,
new to the forum but been lurking for a while. I have been looking and changing my mind on getting a high end watch for the last 5 years. Many of my friends have tags and rolex's but I have always been in love with the omega's. I know which one I want and that's a speedmaster professional moonwatch so this weekend I went to the boutique in Bond Street first I want to say is what fantastic customer service (miles better than the rolex shop) so he got the watch out and I had a play and loved it he then went and got the aventurine edition out well that was a mistake I instantly loved it even the missus was impressed. So here are some questions as the start of my collection do you think it is worth starting with this or should I start smaller, is it really worth the extra cash and if I do decide just to get the standard one will I kick myself in years to come as it will be more difficult to find the aventurine model.
thanks

Sounds too soon. What you really need to do is read every post you can find here about Speedmasters, regular Professional, special editions, limited editions, Apollo editions, old editions, new editions, etc............................................
After this one will speak to you, be patient and trust, they always do 👍

Oh and set an Avatar, a Speedy will see if you don't have one, and ignore you as unworthy.😒

If you fell in love with it, grab it. It's a good start. Remember, Speedys are like potato chips. You can't have just one.

Personally, I'd suggest picking up a standard one and leaving special ones for later. I've found that I run hot and cold on the special ones and LE's. I wanted one of the Aventurines for a while too, but now, I don't think I'd do it.

Get the original first, wear and enjoy. Then start learning about the rest and decide once you know more. There will inevitably be another.

I started with an original one too. I do love the limited editions. I love the hesalite. I use to own a Speediorite. The dial is the best! However I could not get over that this one was fitted with a sapphire crystal, and consequently I sold it after 3-4 weeks.

The Aventurine has the sapphire as well. This makes it a show stopper for me.

I would see if you can get together with other speedy collectors and take a look at their LEs. Members here will gladly show off their speedy watches any chance they can 😀

Did someone say 'Aventurine dial' ??
That was my first Speedmaster...
I still don't have an original moonwatch... And feel no need to have one...
If your heart is singing... What amount of research and pragmatism is going to overpower that?

Say the words out loud, and tell me if you'd feel comfortable standing by them : "I absolutely fell in love with this watch, but some creepy strangers on an Internet forum recommended that I read volumes of text about a watch and buy something I was less in love with because it harkened back to a time for which I have little reverence." They said, 'I wasn't ready to own the watch I really wanted'

If you can say that out loud and it doesn't sound stupid coming out of your mouth... Then by all means... Get something that a small subculture of people responding on a forum will respect...

But if you had the same reaction to the Aventurine as I did... You're crazy to listen to anything but your heart...

It's also no longer in production...

Or you could just get the plain Jane that everyone else has...

My two cents? Go for it. I'm relatively new to the Omega club and have two - a PO GMT and a Tintin. I scoured the internet about the Speedmaster Professional and would have told you that would be my first Omega. But then I saw the PO GMT and fell in love with it. Bought one from Jomashop.com a few weeks ago and then felt bad that I didn't have a Speedy so I splurged (again) and picked up a Tintin. I like it a lot - but I like the GMT more. Go figure. So... get what floats your boat.

Now I'm trying to stop looking at watch sites as I'm really lusting after the GSOTM. <sigh...>

I live vicariously through most of the posters here. I'm just not in a place where I can spend more than a few hundred on a watch right now. Well I could but I spend the money on football tickets (please don't kick me out!)

My life advice.
As person who quit a semi-prestige job to make less money for quality of life and got rewarded by it leading to a more prestige job pay 3x over the one I gave up, my perspective may be different.

If you are paying your bills on time and setting aside enough for retirement and emergencies and have the cash on hand to buy it, just answer these questions.

1. Are you comfortable with the knowledge that at least in short term the value will drop when you take it out of the box?
2. Is it a watch you want to wear and enjoy?
3. When you tried it on did it feel like something you could wear 10 hours straight?
4. Does it strike you as watch you will enjoy five years from now when the fun of the purchase has faded?

If the answer is yes, get it.
If you are looking at it as an investment or part of a serious collection rather than your daily or dress up watch, then wait get a better feel for the universe you are walking in to.

I currently own three watches. One a cheap mass brand roundly derided among watch lovers and I wear it frequently because it got me started in this madness and gosh darn it I like the way it looks. I've got a battered old Elgin that has no collector value worth mentioning but I like it because it is the sort of watch a WWII vet would have purchased as he settled in to middle class civilian life. I also have an old Seamaster that my son might choose to cherish or sell maybe for what I have in it plus inflation when my time is up.

I love my watches because something about each speaks to me and I like putting one on my wrist each day.

The pieces you described sound delightful and if you still have the itch after a few days of reading advice, grab the one that calls to you.

My first high end watch was a Speedy Pro. I really like it. After seeing the difference between hesalite and sapphire in person, I can never own a saphire speedy. I cannot unsee the milky ring.

I think you should get the speedy pro. If the adventurine was in hesalite, it would be a different story.

I would buy a omega seamaster bullhead with white dial.......as others have said, it doesn t matter what people here think really, just buy the one you love the most. There is too much love on this forum for the speedmaster so 99% of peopel will tell tell you to go for one of those, I wouldn t bother with one though😗

You should listen to Hijak's post above. He has bought more watches than most people dream of. Heed his advice. The Adventurine is gorgeous! I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Well the only reason I wouldn't let this pass by is the fact that I have no will power when it comes to a beautiful watch. If this pretty young thing crossed my path it would be snapped up in a heartbeat!😉

I've no idea where you got that figure from but I doubt they have made that many in the last 10 years.
