Great thread! This is my experience but imo chosing is not a science based on checklist but an art. I have 4 watches in my collection and don't intend to buy any more. My pleasure is all about getting to really know and bond with the special few. To find out their stories, connections, place in history and their design etc. In 1970s my grandad gave me his WW1 Waltham pocket watch. In 2009 my late Dad gave me his Omega Speedmaster Professional 145022-78. Both of these have huge personal meaning both to the people who wore them and the times they represent. Then in 2012 I bought a Gagarin Sturmanskie 50th commemorative as a tribute to my dad. We stood together in 1961 to wave to Gagarin as he drove past in Hounslow nr London Airport. That watch although not high end has real meaning to me. Finally I decided I wanted a watch to make my own that one day I could gift to the next generation. And I posted the question on this forum. New or vintage Omega. The best advice I got was to buy something that speaks to you, that will become your own and tell others about you. I went with my heart and bought First Omega in Space 2012. It spoke to me about the pioneering space days of early 60s, Mercury 7 etc but was also shiny new and modern. As were my grandads and dad's watches when they acquired them. And I'm so delighted with my choice. So I would say again Imo go with the watch that speaks to you, has some meaning in whatever way ie doesn't need to have historic meaning, simply make you feel a certain way. Make your connection with it and make it your own. Then it will lead you to other purchases if that's what you want to do. Good luck and enjoy!

I started with the original one as well. The one with hesalite and not crystal. The crystal came later ... I agree Speedies are like chips ... After I started the vintages, 105 003, 145 012, and then I wanted a speed which was important for all key events in my life. the collection is not yet finished and the search is always ON ! a 1971 145 022 (my wife's birth date), a Japan 2004 (my 1st son year), LE 45th 2014 (my 50th birthday), Snoopy 2015 (cancer surgery), and now looking for a 1999 Japan Manga (my daughter birthday) and 2006 appolo XV LE (my 2nd son).
But few other LE are already there : the 2007 LE, 2011 Appolo XV and soon a patch Skylab III ...
