Could anyone help me identify this watch?

Hi,

This was my Grandad's watch. I inherited it.

I know nothing about watches.

Could anyone help me identify what exactly it is, how much roughly it is worth? I don't want to wear it if it is worth a lot of money.

I think the strap is bespoke but looks pretty damaged/well worn. I'd like to maybe get a leather strap put on it.

Thank you

Just a basic gold filled model. No name style attached.

In it's current condition. It has Heirloom value only due to the poor condition of the case.

Strap is a just an expansion bracelet. Bought at any jeweler store

It's not terribly valuable monetarily, so I would recommend spending a few hundred dollars to have it properly serviced, put a nice leather strap on it and get that bracelet off ASAP, it's chewing up the lugs. Wear it in good health in memory of your grand dad.

What a great thing to inherit! Knowing the history makes it beautiful, I'd say. If you want to know exactly what it is you need to open it and post pics of the movement and inside of the case.

My grandpa used to wear a watch with a band like that. I never understood why. I guess it was the style, but looks uncomfortable.

Is it possible to get it repaired/restored? Would it be even worth doing that?

Absolutly! These are great watches and can last 500 years if properly cared for.

At the moment the restoration might cost as much as the watch is worth. But you will not find a better watch mechanically. Such watches as this were the apex of mechanical precision (and while this model was not rated for navigation, it will keep pretty good time.)

Check out the You tube videos (I like the person with the handle 'wrist watch revival') To get an idea of what a restoration involves. A lot of younger collectors prefer the chipped bubble paint dials as it show the watch is a proper vintage one.

Before anything is done. You would need to check the condition of the movement.

However. The condition of the underside of the bottom right lug looks really bad. You would need to remove the bracelet and see how much is worn away.

If anything can be brazed in to fill the lost area. Case would need to be fully sanded in the worn areas to feather in the remaining gold fill into the brass main case.

Then gold plated. Never really going to look the same once done

Case work, plating and movement service and your probably going to be in for about $400 or so

Only you can decide if the work is worth it
